Re: whats your salinity

Yes, that seems low to me. I keep mine at 1.025

1.025 as well. Not such a big deal for most fish, but corals will appreciate the proper concentration of minerals and trace elements that comes from keeping salinity closer to natural levels.

jubjubrsx 01/08/2008 12:14 AM

ok im just really starting up mine....added the sand and everything the other night at about 1.021 so im hoping it will be fine...i just added some more salt to try to raise it up some....

asm481 01/08/2008 12:35 AM

Do not get in the practice of adding salt to your tank! Mix it outside the tank and make sure it is well mixed-12 to 24 hours with a power head. With no inhabitants you might be ok now but salt can collect on the sand and dissolve very slow so you end up way high on SG.

LambZero 01/08/2008 12:37 AM

i like mine ay 1.022 so if any water evaporates the salinity doesn't go way to high (its a fish only tank though to

lightdir 01/08/2008 12:41 AM

i keep mine 1.025-1.026

reefhead165 01/08/2008 12:43 AM

1.025

colotl 01/08/2008 12:44 AM

I also keep mine at 1.025-1.026

a good read on Salinity

35 ppt. Just like the ocean :D

The numbers given above are specific gravity (SG), not salinity. SG is temperature dependant, and swing arm hydrometers are unreliable. Get a refractometer and some calibration fluid (don't use distilled water like the instructions say). You will use it ALL the time, so it is worth the 40-50 bucks.

Generally speaking, you are looking at an SG of 1.026 for a salinity of 35‰

Mines at 1.026 (35ppt)

cloak 01/08/2008 02:36 AM

Hoping it's at 1.025. Everything looks good though.

julianp 01/08/2008 04:18 AM

I do 1.025, but when I had to rely on a cheap hydrometer I was always nervous it would be inaccurate, so ran the tank at 1.023.I figured that way the hydrometer could be off by as much as .003 without killing anything. Still not good practice, though, I know...

snorvich 01/08/2008 06:12 AM

1.026 but I measure it with a calibrated refractometer which is one of the most important tools you can own. If you don't have one, try and get one. Useful for acclimation as well as tank maintenance.

AJ69 01/08/2008 10:00 AM

.026-.025 (refrac)

leoslizards 01/08/2008 10:43 AM

Where can I get a cheap calibration fluid from? They are $10 on ebay. I just order my refractometer for $50 and it should be getting here in about a week so I want to be ready.

snorvich 01/08/2008 10:47 AM

Pinpoint makes a great one. I got mine from Marine Depot but you may be able to find it on ebay as well. SG 1.0264

dileggi 01/08/2008 11:06 AM

I've been keeping mine at 1.023, but now I'm thinking I need to raise mine?

That's the one I found of ebay for $10 shipped. The Filter Guys sells it for $3.25 but they charge $11.00 shipping.

cardiffgiant 01/08/2008 11:23 AM

1.025. I've been using a swing arm for ages, but recently ordered a refractometer.

Zoophile 01/08/2008 11:54 AM

I'd been keeping mine at 1.027 with SPS in future plans, but I've dropped it down to 1.025. I don't have an automated top-off (it's on its way), so the SG was sometimes swinging a little too high for comfort due to evaporation. I'd rather have a safer comfort zone.

The_Browns 01/08/2008 12:33 PM

Mine is between 1.024 - 1.025 (refractometer)

JUNI0R 01/08/2008 12:47 PM

Mine is 1.024-1.026, with a refractometer

Brandon Cassidy 01/08/2008 01:43 PM

Yeah Corals like a little more salinity. I keep mine at around 1.026
with regular replacement of evap water.
