what salinity do everyone perfer to keep their tank at?
i been trying to keep mine from 1.021-1.022, does this seem a tad low any preferences?

Yes, that seems low to me. I keep mine at 1.025

1.025 as well. Not such a big deal for most fish, but corals will appreciate the proper concentration of minerals and trace elements that comes from keeping salinity closer to natural levels.

ok im just really starting up mine....added the sand and everything the other night at about 1.021 so im hoping it will be fine...i just added some more salt to try to raise it up some....

Do not get in the practice of adding salt to your tank! Mix it outside the tank and make sure it is well mixed-12 to 24 hours with a power head. With no inhabitants you might be ok now but salt can collect on the sand and dissolve very slow so you end up way high on SG.

i like mine ay 1.022 so if any water evaporates the salinity doesn't go way to high (its a fish only tank though to

The numbers given above are specific gravity (SG), not salinity. SG is temperature dependant, and swing arm hydrometers are unreliable. Get a refractometer and some calibration fluid (don't use distilled water like the instructions say). You will use it ALL the time, so it is worth the 40-50 bucks.

Generally speaking, you are looking at an SG of 1.026 for a salinity of 35‰

I do 1.025, but when I had to rely on a cheap hydrometer I was always nervous it would be inaccurate, so ran the tank at 1.023.I figured that way the hydrometer could be off by as much as .003 without killing anything. Still not good practice, though, I know...

1.026 but I measure it with a calibrated refractometer which is one of the most important tools you can own. If you don't have one, try and get one. Useful for acclimation as well as tank maintenance.

Where can I get a cheap calibration fluid from? They are $10 on ebay. I just order my refractometer for $50 and it should be getting here in about a week so I want to be ready.

Pinpoint makes a great one. I got mine from Marine Depot but you may be able to find it on ebay as well. SG 1.0264

That's the one I found of ebay for $10 shipped. The Filter Guys sells it for $3.25 but they charge $11.00 shipping.

1.025. I've been using a swing arm for ages, but recently ordered a refractometer.

I'd been keeping mine at 1.027 with SPS in future plans, but I've dropped it down to 1.025. I don't have an automated top-off (it's on its way), so the SG was sometimes swinging a little too high for comfort due to evaporation. I'd rather have a safer comfort zone.

Yeah Corals like a little more salinity. I keep mine at around 1.026
with regular replacement of evap water.
