Let's see your Tyree green Toadstool Leather?

I just got a frag from my LFS for 125.00 Don't know how good of a deal that is but it is about the size of a quarter and had all it's nice green polyps extended.
Just wondering where you place yours in the tank? High or low? I have mine up near the top of my rock work and the polyps came out within 2 hrs. How fast do they grow and are they easy to frag?

They grow about the same speed as other toadstools. I have mine in the top half of my tank. They will stay expanded for the first few days in the tank then close up for a while soon after. Usually after 3 to 5 days they start opening again, but they can be tempermental so don't be too worried.

I am pretty sure I have a green toad stool, I doubt it is Tyree though. It is just as bright as yours afelder and is about 6" across now.

afelder 04/19/2007 09:36 PM

I know what you mean about the Tyree. I have four neon green toadstools in the tank and that little one is the only one I know for sure is the Tyree. I have one that is still getting used to the tank 4" across that is not as vibrant and I think it is probably the ORA not the Tyree.

What is the ORA?

afelder 04/20/2007 09:26 AM

Oceans Reefs Aquariums they sell captive bred fish and corals. They tend to adapt to aquariums well because they have never been wild. They have been selling a lot of very nice corals recently.

jski711 04/22/2007 09:50 PM

i've got a 6-bulb T5 tek, and i love it. unless i get a tank that i can't do T5s on, (an odd shaped tank) im sticking with T5. i have better color and faster growth than my metal halides.

I felt a little dirty on my way home like I had just been violated. Oh well. Live and learn. Hey do any of you want to sale me a frag of yours? All the ones in the pics look greener then mine:confused: Now I know I got raped.

afelder 04/23/2007 07:41 PM

They can take a while to decide on a color. They will also look different depending on your lighting. A couple of mine came from a friend who had 65k lighting and they seemed to be very yellow for 3 weeks before beginning to color green. I am also going to be fragging on 5/1/07 so drop me a pm and we can work out a trade or something.

hoodrat 04/23/2007 07:53 PM

They will color up over time if its a greeny. Dont get discouraged and dont worry about the price as long as you like it and are happy thats all that counts. :D I will prob frag sooner or later we will see

I would like to go on record to clarify a little bit about the history of THE green polyp toadstool. For starters, the green polyp leather ORA sells is not nearly as green as the original, not even close. Secondly, the green polyp sarcophyton has been in circulation in Denver for almost 10 years here, wayyyy before tyree ever made it one of his LE corals. Around here it is so common that most reefers give frags away and stores around here sell generous thumbsized "frags" for $40-60 everyday. Anybody remember seeing the picture of the huge green polyp leather from Chris Cap's tank? Well anyway, I think we should rename it the Rocky Mtn green polyp leather. Anyway, here is my picture.

reefez 04/28/2007 12:46 AM

So how fast can I expect mine to grow?

redox 04/28/2007 06:06 AM

they grow pretty fast, well mine does. It might be the natural light it loves so much . It gets larger every week:D

eddie c 04/28/2007 05:23 PM
