Let me see your Phoenix 14K's
 

Its time to put new bulbs in my Current Outer Orbit. I am thinking of going from the stock 10K's to the Phoenix 14K's. I have read lots of great reviews of the Phoenix 14K. If you have these bulbs can I see a pic of your tank. Even better would be a before the Phoenix bulbs and after to see the difference.

what wattage are you running. the 150 phoenix bulbs don't look like the 250's. I have a friend that runs 250's and they are very blue, I run 150's and they have very little blue. Ballasts also can vary the color of the bulb a bit.

They are 150's running on an electronic HQI ballast.

I just ordered an Aquamedic AB pendant with 14K 250 Pheonix bulbs. I want to see some pics too! Come on, PICS!!!!!!

I use 250W HQI 14K. This bulb is awesome at giving corals blue colors and the growth is amazing. Many people say the Phoenix are bad for pink acropora, but they kept their color in my tank and they grow very fast!

ok, so since they are 150's they will be mostly white with just a tint of blue after burning in fully. They actually get whiter the longer you run them, but the blue tint will still be there to an extent and there is absolutely no yellow tint. There was a thread with other people running 150's saying exactly that just a week or two ago that can confirm that. They are decent bulbs for 150, but without some supplements they can wash some colors out. No bulb is perfect as far as color though. My next bulb I'll be trying is the radium 150's. They have as much or more par on every ballast but are a 20k bulb so they will have more blue and if they follow the 250 watt bulbs they will have better color and "pop" then the phoenix 14k's. The price difference is not exactly something to cough at between the radiums and the phoenix bulbs. Overall the phoenix 14k is definitely one of the best 150DE bulbs in my opinion.

I run a 150w phoenix on an ARO electronic ballest and its very blue. I think the color depends on the manufacturer's run of bulbs.

Photos of a tank are 100% useless for the purpose of determining bulb color.

The camera does not capture what your eye sees. The camera settings (white balance, color correction, sensor/film type, post processing, lens quality, ambient light, etc.) all play a role in what you see. To make matters worse, your computer monitor is likely not even close to displaying true color. Press the "color temperature" button on that puppy one time and see how much the color rendering changes. What about color profiles? Your windows color settins? Etc...

If you want to see the color of something, you need to look at it in person. Graphics houses, movie studios, tv stations and others with deep pockets struggle to get it right.... and they rarely do.

What amazes me is how many people don't get it, and instead continue to ask for photos so that they can see how a certain bulb will look over a tank. This is not one of those "lets agree to disagree" points. The fact is that you can't use a photo to discern how a bulb will look over a tank.

The photos I posted only took about 18 seconds each to adjust. Which one looks more natural? Press the "color temperature" button on your monitor... now which one? Now look at the same web page on your neighbors computer... which one now?

Go to the local big box electronics store. You know, the one with 100 TVs all playing the same channel. Notice that the picture on EVERY tv looks different? Which TV is displaying what your eyes would see if you were on the TV set watching the program being made?
