Show off your Possum Wrasse

Would love to see pictures...or better yet...videos of your Possum Wrasses. I've only seen them in pictures on the net. Haven't had a chance to see them in a LFS. I have seen a couple photos when I did a search in the forums...but would love to see more photos of actual Possum Wrasses in your tanks.

Thanks!
Pam

I did end up getting a Pygmy Possum Wrasse. Here's a pic. Anyone else want to share their pics? What is your Possum's favorite food? Will he eat any pellets or flakes and if so, what brand? Dried Cyclopese or anything else? Right now, mine turns his nose up at anything dry, even if it's soaked in garlic extreme. Loves frozen brine, but I know it's not the most nutritious (I did buy enriched brine by Hiraki, or something close to that name). This little guy is so cool !! Since I just added my 3rd fish, the possum is coming out more and getting braver going after his share of food. He's housed with a purple firefish and a tail spot blenny right now. Bye. Pam

Searching for pods as usual

And a video. My possum wrasse is always out and about usually but when there is a strange grey box right next to his glass he gets more shy so I had to feed him. Sorry about the algae but I was too lazy to scrape it off before taking this. By the way pammy I am pretty sure that both your and my possum wrasse are Wetmorella triocellata.

Great video Frostyeel !! Thanks for posting that. I think you're correct, and we both have a Wetmorella triocellata. Looked most like it in an article that I read on Possum Wrasses.

Thanks all for posting your pics! Very cool to see since it's not the most common fish.

Bye
Pam

triocellata is a synonym of nigropinnata.

The pictures posted so far show two differant species. The fish with only 2 bars show examples of nigropinnata. Young specimen have more bars that disappear with age. Bars are always yellow to a tannish color.

The pictures of the 5 bar fish are a newer undescribed species. You can clearly see the differance as the bars are always white in this species and as adults all the bars will remain.

cool looking fish.. are they hard to care for?

pammy 08/02/2007 04:47 AM

Hi Gabriel. I don't find my possum hard to care for. They are a very peaceful fish, and can be very shy. If you want to see yours if you get one, be sure to have him with peaceful tankmates. Mine was the first fish I added, and is always cruising in and out of the rockwork, and whenever I am near the tank, he comes out (knows how feeds him!). He eats frozen mysis, frozen brine and frozen bloodworms. Very cool little fish!!

They couldn't be any easier. Mine eats anything the anthias miss but has a preferance for small mysids.

Pam has yours kept all of its vertical strips?

I just got one over the weekend, it seems always hidden. Sometime, I can get a glimps of it thru rock work, but most of time, I really don't know where he is. When I feed other fish, I never see him come out.

Usually, how long would take this little guy come out open water and eat? He is in the 50 g tank with 5 chromi & two clowns

pammy 08/13/2007 07:03 PM

Hi Carl. Yes, so far, mine has kept all 4 of his stripes.
Bye

Hi Rekk. It probably depends on how aggressive the fish in your tank are, as to how often your possum will come into the open. It can definitely take a few weeks for them to become more comfortable. Mine comes out often now, especially when I stand in front of the tank and he thinks I'm going to feed him.
