Thinning out mushrooms

My mushrooms are starting to take over parts of my tank and I want to thin them out some...question: If I cut the mushroom as close to the bottom of the stalk as possible will that kill that mushroom or will it grow right back?

It will probably grow back.

i cut it right in half with razor cut through the stomac the middle but leave the other half hanging like dont cut it all the way through and it will attach its self and split apart

I have seen a miniscule part of the foot left on the rock come back many times to form another mushroom...

Fingernails? Just keep picking at them right before you do a water change. Over and over.

Yea they are pretty hard to thin out, sharp scissors help for about a week or two. I love the look they add to the tank but would like to have other corals as well.

Joe's Juice does a good job. But if your keeping the main colony, your gonna have to do it often.

You might also have luck removing some if you point a powerhead at the colony -- shrooms will detach themselves if they don't like their location, and with any luck some will loosen up or let go and you can remove them. If it's possible, you could put the rock into a bucket or place an onion bag over the colony in the tank before you try blasting it with current, that way the shrooms can't take off once they detach.

Whether you're cutting them off or using current to force them to let go of the rock, you could try tossing the removed mushrooms into a container filled with rubble/small rocks, maybe in the sump -- they'll attach quickly, and you can trade them in at the LFS or give them to fellow hobbyists.
