Is my clam a goner?

It has been this way for 2days. Parameters look good. I did a water change last week. I haven't seen anything messing with it. My other clam looks great, no problems

Your second clam is ill as well.
The open gape and the brown discoloration of the gills ....means it is increasingly being deprived of Oxygen as microbes colonize its gill tissues.
How long have you had these croceas?

I didn't know that...Thanks. They have been in my system for5 weeks this sunday. What can I do to improve there condion?

i would love to see a reference to this, where are you getting this from?

Can you list your waters parameters, lighting, and how deep the clams are?

colotl 11/03/2007 11:33 AM

I have 4 lamp tek5 48in. 2blueplus and 2 aquablue special. Clams are 15in from the lights. my parameters are:
PH- 8.4
AMMONIA-0
NITRITE-0
NITRATE-10
PHOS-0
CALCIUM-460
ALK-161
TEMP-82

Lighting is on the low side IMO, the bluer lights tend to be lower in PAR and lack the punch necessary to reach that deep, although I cant say if that may be the problem or not. Not familiar with the scale your using to reference alk, can you translate it to dkh or meg/l? Also can you test for Magnesium?

161ppm=9.016dkh

Mag is one thing i don't have sorry. I've been meaning to. Better do it know? Is everything else looking good beside the Mag? If everything else is good then maybe I just picked a bad clam from the LFS. Thanks guys for the responses.

What bearing does Mag have on clams?

graveyardworm 11/05/2007 05:56 PM

There may not be much truth in it, but I have heard that high Mg ( over 1350, which I dont feel is very high ) is bad for clams, just something I've heard. Low Mg would definately be bad if it was low enough.

Perhaps someone here can clear up the high Mg thing for me. I know my Mg has been over that with no adverse effects on my clam. Mg is important for calcifying organisms.
