Bimaculatus anthias, who has them?

Hey Guys,
i just ordered some and i wanted to hear of some first hand experience with this fish. please share.

emerald chondro 03/18/2005 10:54 PM

I haven't kept them but have some other anthias species im just wondering where did you find these? the only place I can find them is liveaquaria, and they only ever have females.

tom obrecht 03/18/2005 11:55 PM

I just got a trio from the lfs this week. They came in with a different name but I think they are bimaculas from the pics in Scott Michaels book. One fish died at the store, one was listless when I put him in the tank and one is pretty active in the tank and feeding. I've only had them for about 36 hours so I'll know more in the near future. I'll be anxious to know how they ship. Keep me informed.

From what i have heard they ship well, the problem is getting them to feed. I have seen them at LFS but they are way too expensive there $120 so i just ordered 4 females from Live aquaria. I will let them decide who will be the male, they can change sex remember so is sometimes better to buy all females and you will still wind up with a male.

s13silvia 03/19/2005 11:59 AM

a LFS i stopped by yesterday had 3 of these, a male and 2 females... nice lookin fish and very expensive, i think they're asking about $68-69 for females and around $75 for males

Julio 03/19/2005 12:18 PM

that is considered cheap around here

Julio

Let me know what you think of the fish when they come in. I'm real interested of getting a few more females and like you hoping one will change to a male. Good luck!!

Thanks Tom,
i will keep you posted.

I think I'm down to one fish. The fish that was real listless has not been seen since the first day. The one I have left has been eating but is not out in the open alot like the other anthias species I have. She likes to hang out around corals and under rockwork and grabs food as it passes by. Don't know if in time if she will become more brave or if this species is more shy. I'll be in touch as time goes on.

They are a deep water species and have been known to hide when first introduced to a tank for a few days to a week before they start to venture out and start feeding. Mine are coming in this Tues and i am really excited to get them.

Julio 03/22/2005 01:57 PM

Hey Guys,
just wanted to let you know that the fish never came in, i called to see what happened and they never shiped them out cause they said there was a hold on the shipment, they also said they left a message on my cell to notify me but they never did. Great service huh?

tom obrecht 03/22/2005 03:47 PM

Bummer!! That makes two of us disappointed. Hope they make it right for ya.

Julio 03/30/2005 02:34 PM

Hey Guys,
just got a call from Live Aquaria, they are gonna ship out today and i should have them tomorrow and i will let you guys know how they come in and act up. I can't wait to get them.

tom obrecht 03/30/2005 04:45 PM

How many did you order? Male and some girls??

Julio 03/30/2005 06:42 PM

4 females, let them sort it out as to which one willbe the male.

tedmc2 03/31/2005 06:01 PM

Julio

I see that you have listed a 90 gal as your current tank. Are you concerned at all about having 4 of these guys (or girls) in a 90 gal?

The reason I ask is I just ordered a female from liveaquaria.com myself. They have males listed as in stock but I was concerned about getting more than 1 due to having a 75 gal tank.

Thanks
Ted

Julio 03/31/2005 07:30 PM

I would not put more than 1 male in that size tank, these guys will fight.
I just placed mine in the main tank and they hung around the front of the tank for about 5 minutes and then they all hid, but 1 is starting to venture out, the lyretail anthias are looking at them as if they are some sort of freak show, they go up to them and just stare.

tom obrecht 03/31/2005 09:08 PM

I'm curious how they are adapting to the other anthias? I have about 30 assorted anthias and some of the shyer sp haven't made it. (Fathead, Tuka's) I'm wondering if you feel this species would do ok with bartletts, squamipinnis, hutchi's and one parvo.

Glad to hear you finally got them!! Tom

Julio 03/31/2005 09:56 PM

I am stil waiting ont eh outcome, i am sure they will be fine with Hutchii and barletts, i have them in with lyretails, but i have had bicolors with the lyretails before and the bicolors would pick on the lyretails, but they fought back and killed them.

Northside Reef 03/31/2005 10:36 PM

Julio I will be very interested in how these do with your lyretails I have 4 female and one male lyretail. I looked at the Bimaculatus but decided against it because I thought I had too much light for these guys.

please keep us updated

tom obrecht 04/01/2005 08:39 AM

Northside Reef Even though I haven't had personal exerience with Bimaculatus I have seen them in brightly lit tanks.

Julio 04/01/2005 05:55 PM

Yeah, Wayne Shang has tehm in his main tank and he has 1k watt halides on the tank.
Mine are still in hiding but i can see where they are hiding, They are getting used to the surroundings so i am hoping for them to start venturing out by the end ofthe weekend.

tedmc2 04/01/2005 06:02 PM

Julio

What are you feeding them?

Julio 04/01/2005 06:11 PM

i have fed brine shrimp, mysis, and cyclops, i also fed some pellets, but i know they wont' eat the synthetic stuff for a while.

Interesting. I am upgrading to a 280. When that project is done I was going to add a few more female lyretails but maybe a few female Bimaculatus would be a better choice.

I will be following this thread.
