building of a frag 'room'
ok
this is my first attempt at medium scale fragging in the next few weeks ill post pictures of the setup right now i am waiting for two 72 inch by 36 inch tubs these systems will be used for sps and soft coral also i plan on having a small food station set up( phyto. rotifers and copepods.) mostly for in house use but possiably any excess will go to an lfs picts will include before and after photos of the room the time frame for this is 1 week tanks in place week 2 plumbing in place week 3 lighting orded and inplace also ro and saltwater vats inplace week 4 start mother colony frags in display tank hopfuly have coral in soft coral system by week 7 lets see how this works out so far money put in to this $421 i still havent decided between raceways or not.... |
Sounds sweet! Can't wait for pics.
|
Sounds like your still trying to figure out your plumbing for sure. I can't wait for pics either.
|
im ddebating using raceways inside the vats. and i can alternate the current. more velocity from the same size pump meaning less heat build up
also being in florida i plan on running lights at night to reduce heat |
they are out of the tubs i wanted. they say they get them in by the end of NEXT week...
i may just go with the smaller tub. it is about the same usable area since one is a moter style and the other isnt ( one has a curved boottom on one edge |
It sounds like you have a great plan---you should stick to it. I hate when "in-stock" or not influences my decisions. I can't take my own advice---but again--you look like you have a good plan.
|
well the deeper tubs give me more room for coral growth without having to fill the container to the top.
the size is 52 instead of 72 ( or some small number..) this was actualy my original plan. but the few extra inches changed my mind when i orded.. i have room for like 8 or so of these tanks. so first 2 it dosnt really matter the size |
Where are you ordering these from so I can get a picture of what they look like, so maybe I can help you decide if they have a webpage. Will you still be able to do the raceways with the smaller tubs? Cause I think thats a pretty cool idea, which I have wished I could sometime do.
|
i changed the order nce again cause htey are now out of the smaller ones
i switcdh to fiberglass. ( which is tougher and will actualy be bettwer in the long run) i actualy saw one of the polyethelin tangs today and it seems so weak... glad this happend otherwise i wouldent of had te chance to change my mind! they make figerblass all the way up to 96 by 36 ( but 24 deep) im getting a 60 by 30 ( decent size) and will still do the race ways. aquatic eco is who im getting these from |
the baffles will have two alternating pumps.
that way i can get some alternating motion with the raceways 6 inches wide im hopping i can run it off of a maxi jet or seio ( remember this will be start stop) i am going to try airlifts first tho and use two air pumps.. one on one off |
How do airlifts work? I have never used them.
|
How many gallons per tank are we talking about here. You say they're 60x30x24, am I right? That would make them 187 gal? Are they the blue fiberglass tanks?
|
fiberglass is uv resistant right?
|
Fiberglass works well and has a very long life. Are you building stands for the tanks or are you going to be setting them on the ground? What kind of lighting do you plan on using?
|
ok. already 975 bucks in the hole from these two tanks alone :(
airlifts work like an Undergravel uplift tube.. except with even more air ( im thinking of using 70 liters a minute for 3 airlifts ) here are some picts of where they are going! :) got my work cut out for me ^^ |

ok got the tanks... still cleaning the place out also this is why fishtanks and small cars dont mix |
awsome. those are good tanks. aquatic eco? you can stack one on top of another and use the bottom one as a sum I suppose?
Or you couls elevate them and place rubbermade tanks below? I'm interested in investigting how to maximize growing space and minimizing the system footprint. Would it not make sense to place the sump(s) under the tanks? I suppose equipment access should be considered though. considering using those troughes, or building acrylic tanks, or both. still debating t5 vs. halide and want to minimize energy consumption as well. |
well
there ya go. and that is a full sheet of eggcrate for size referance i thought about one top of another both for grow out but... light heat would be a problom one is for sps the other is for softies i will be using MH .. i thought about t5 but i want the high par of 5.5 k bulbs on the softies i will be using a old over head light. with 4 vho bulbs ( see pict with car.. it is the thing in the back seat in the latest pict you can see some wierd lines int he background.. that is polycarbonate that will be used in raceways. |
step 1 compleated 5 days early ( well almost done.. all thats left is sealing the concreat but that dosnt take long..... infact off to homedepot i go!
|
did you find the tanks locally or ordered from aquatic eco?
