Are These Guys Good Or Bad

Hi all !!!

I just put some anemones in my tank and wondering what they are.

I live in Corpus Christi Texas and went down to the jetty rocks and pulled them off from there in the tidal zone.

Are these guys good or bad and are they cool with fish ?

MAN NOBODY CAN ID THESE GUYS :(

wicked_NaCl_h2o 12/15/2007 09:53 PM

They can easily catch fish so I keep my Anthopleura kurogane anemone in its own tank. What you have is an actinia species. You might find exactly what the name of these anemones are on this website. http://www.actiniaria.com/

It looks like some of them are a Anthopleura kurogane but I can't tell because its not a sharp image.

signal_4 12/15/2007 10:46 PM

Thanks for the info Wicked. I checked out that website and went through them all. Im not sure thats what they are..... all the ones that kinda looked like them were on the west coast.... The only ones that were gulf coast or carribean were the condy's....

The search continues and I will definetly try to get some better pics.

zma21 12/16/2007 12:10 AM

I would try to refrain from putting a wild animal in your tank before knowing anything about it..

signal_4 12/16/2007 01:07 AM

I talked to Richard from TBS which is where I got everything from and showed him the pictures.

He advised that they would be ok to put in there.

hybridgenius 12/16/2007 03:30 AM

Thought it was a condy for a second.

thegheco 12/16/2007 11:55 AM

Very cute anemones, how big across are they, and are the pictures their true color? Kind of blue?
They look like some sort of flower anemone to me, but I am no expert on them.
They have "less" tentacles then a flower.
Please let us know exactly what they are when you find out ok?

ginger7286 12/16/2007 12:18 PM

very cool and interesting, but I agree I would not place anything in my tank without knowing what they are. Does Richard know what they are? Telling you they will be okay for the tank is different from knowing what they actually are. Good luck and let us know what they are when you find out.

davocean 12/16/2007 12:33 PM

What's the water temp where you pulled them compared to your tank?

signal_4 12/17/2007 12:10 PM

I emailed the local Aquarium some photos and hopefully they will know.

Everything seems to be doing well and happy. They haven't attacked anything that I can see.

Also the temp in the tank ranges from about 75 to 80 degrees.....right now its at 73.5...... the temp in the gulf was at 67 degrees that day.

yes those are true colors. they are actually very small in size ranging from a few centimeters to about an inch.... I would say that most are about 1/2 inch across.

AquariaOCD 12/17/2007 12:13 PM

Those are common warty anemones. Fine for your reef tank. They do not bother anything. I have had several in my tank for years. I got mine off the Bolivar Jetty.

signal_4 12/17/2007 12:28 PM

COOL !!! Thanks so much AquariaOCD. I thought that they matched the pics that I found on warty's .... but there isnt much info on them. Are they safe for Clown fish as well ?

wicked_NaCl_h2o 12/17/2007 12:31 PM

Yeah thats where my anemone came from too it came from the gulf. My lfs gave it to me for free. I love the anemone its a big eater and will accept any food. For being such a small anemone they are strong, so if they get ahold of your fingers its difficult to get them to let go. They won't bother any fish that are much bigger than them but I wouldn't trust them with small fish. I would like to have one a little more blue and purple like yours.
Here is mine.

Excellent... Thanks so much wicked_NaCl_h2o. Im so gald that they are are cause I love watching them.

AquariaOCD 12/17/2007 12:55 PM

Bad news is that clowns will not host with them, but I have never had one eat a fish. They are really very beautiful and very hardy. Mine have never wandered around the tank. Ditto on what wicekd says about them being strong. I have had then take away the tongs that I feed them shrimp with!

AquariaOCD 12/17/2007 12:57 PM

The Jettys are absolutely covered with them, Wicked. I have blue, green, red, and all kinds of color morphs.

signal_4 12/17/2007 12:59 PM

Thats cool..... I can live with the clowns not hosting them.... I just want to make sure that the wartys dont eat them !!!!

kiknchikn 12/17/2007 01:04 PM

How big do they get?

signal_4 12/17/2007 01:14 PM

Just snapped a few more pics

The biggest mine have gotten are about 1-1/2" at the base. the furthest I have seen them extend is about the same. They are one of the favorite inverts of my tank and have survived all the mistakes I have made over the years. For what it is worth, I have found lots of great critters on the Texas jettys. Pistol shrimp, pom-pom crabs, tons of different small inverts.

wicked_NaCl_h2o 12/17/2007 02:10 PM

I think these anemones are great for people with small tanks. I agree with AquariaOCD these are very hardy anemones. signal_4
I like the third picture with the orange mouth you have some really cool looking ones. Makes me want to go get more of them they are such great pets and so easy to care for. After I feed mine I swear it gets up to 2.5" and then the next day it goes back to its normal size 1.5"
AquariaOCD have any of yours reproduced? I have only had mine since july its still just one anemone, and I feed it once every three days.

I wish I could get one. They sound like really awesome nems. You have no idea how envious I am of you people living near areas where you can "harvest" critters for your tank :)

Nope, no splits on mine in 5+ years. I fed mine real often at first, but dropped back to no more than once a week.
