Small Tang+55
 

I was wondering what small tang I can keep in a 55g for about 8 months till i get my 125? Now before all the "tang Police" people jump all over me, I was thinking a rely small tang, the size of a quarter(maybe alittle bigger). Please help, and know "pig headed know it all's" please. I just need input

i would suggest just waiting until your 125 is ready for fish. small tangs have a very low success rate. You would want to look more for a medium sized fish

well about 3 years ago ordered a small regal tang from a online vender, he was about the size of a dime, I keot him for 2 years till I gave him away. keeping them alive woulding be a problem for me

some people are successful with the small hippo tangs that are available, sounds like you are one. personally, I don't feel like they are a great bet. you really will need to upgrade pretty quickly. my brother-in-law had a tiny hippo, it got to over 6 inches in a little over a year.

my lfs has a small lieutenant tang, they have had it for months and it is healthy but has grown very slowly. IME mimic tangs are fairly slow growers as well, and do pretty well even at 2 inches if the specimen is healthy.

Here in the tropics I catch my own tangs, and I find the small quarter to half dollar size tangs are not too problematic, provided you have lots of LR for them to browse on, and non-aggressive tankmates.

I think many of the problems people have with the smaller size tangs is due to the stress and the lack of feeding involved with the transporting of the small tangs from the place of collection to your home.
Tiny tangs have an awful small gut and are virtually on the verge of starvation by the time they arrive at the LFS. Whichever species you decide on, I recommend you have your LFS hold the specimen for you for a couple of weeks to make sure it is eating well and recovers from the rigors of transport. Make sure the tang's belly does not appear pinched - it should be rounded like the rest of it's body. Also make sure the area above it's eyes are not sunken in.

I agree it better just to wait. You never know what could happen down the the road and that 8month window could turn into a longer time.
