Hello (self introduction here)
 

Hi Everybody!

My name is Neil and it's been about a year since I've had a tank. It was FO and I was just starting to get my toes wet with live rock. Life became busy and I had to give it up for a bit. I really miss the hobby and I've got the itch to start again. So... I'm really excited that there's such an active group in town.

Eventually the tank is coming out of the garage, but in the meantime I'm taking it slowly and discovering what I need to make my gutted FOWLR into a decent reef setup. Most of what I need I'm finding plenty of information, but I'm really stuck on the lighting.

I want the pretty shimmer of halides so that's easy. Bulb colour and supplementation though is really confusing. Hopefully by the time I've got the funds saved it'll be less of a mystery.

So... excited about returning to the hobby and finding this group. I live in Elk Grove so hopefully I'll make it up to Folsom for the meetup!

As for what temp bulb: just start checking out different people's tanks. That might be the best way to decide what combination looks best to you.

Maybe we can kick off the third round of our Tank Tour (Folsom). That would be a good start for seeing some really nice tanks.

We do tend to enjoy stirring the pot and usually have well thought out and civilized debates, though some of us tend to have strong emotions about what is the best way to do things.
Ask lots of questions, and you will get lots of answers, whether you you agree or disagree, they will come.

Welcome to the fray!! I think Mark nailed it - find a setup that you like the look of and go with it. Dont get too caught up in the science right off the starting gate, just enjoy the ride.

Welcome Neil. You'll find lots of info around these parts.

There's more to it than this, and OPINIONS VARY but basically... Lower kelvin rated bulbs have a yellower color but they stimulate growth better (5,500kelvin to 10,000kelvin). Higher kelvin range is crisper white to blue, but they don't stimulate growth as much (12,000kelvin to 22,000kelvin). Some people combine the two: One for growth, the other to supplement the pretty color. Hope that's a helpful start. Somebody else correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks Kevin! I know about the kelvin scale and how it relates to colour and growth. I'm more interested in the subjective aesthetic... Some people SWEAR by the colour of VHO actinics while others avoid the supp issue w/ a whatever-K bulb on an xyz ballast at the expense of growth.

Reading on the boards has given me a familiarity with what would work, but not what I want.

I saw that Sanjay is coming in Feb. That's really awesome! I'll definitely be coming to that. :)
