Help on ID

I just set up my tank a few days ago, and I was looking around in it for life when I found this:

I was just wondering what it was and if it was good/bad/does nothing. They're all over this one piece of rock and they look kind of cool.

:strooper: (they have the coolest smileys at this place :p )

are you talking about the red stuff.

lol...
Yeah, I mean that red thing in the center of the picture, with the short, stubby branches coming off of it.

Foramiferan, Its like a giant amoeba with a skeleton. Harmless filter feeders and very cool.

cool indeed,
thanks

that foram is a Homotrema AKA Red Foram. they are a good sign of water quality.

Really? I'm cycling, so I guess that they won't be so happy by the end.

You'd be surprised... Mine were on the rock when I first put them in, and they just didn't seem to grow during the cycle. They started really growing about 6 months later.

Paintbug 01/05/2008 08:04 PM

you will be surprised what will survive the cycle. :)

kar93 01/05/2008 08:09 PM

Ive got hundreds of them since i first put the rock in the tank

Give your a tank a year and you'll be amazed at what you find. :)

Live rock is one of the coolest parts of this hobby imo.

Do you need to add any food specifically for them, or is what's naturally in a tank good enough for them?
