Aquascape - What do you think?

I've always liked pillars and recently bought a 70g tank that I'm still building in the garage. Have some live rock cooking also. Here's my attempt at some pillars - just curious as to what you guys/gals think.

Rocks on the left are 14" high. Rocks on the right are 16.5" high. Combined width is 30" long.

That is awesome, put it in and add some more. It will look nice when all in place.

Kigs 10/06/2007 01:43 AM

man i love that pillar on the right. that's such an awesome shape! how are you making them? drilled LR?

edwing206 10/06/2007 01:47 AM

Those are sweet! Can't wait to see the tank when it's done.

ClayWagner 10/06/2007 02:14 AM

Lookin' good so far.

ckprax 10/06/2007 02:59 AM

That looks sweet, are those drilled? I am planning on doing something very similar in my 80.

Trigeek 10/06/2007 07:02 AM

Very good!!! I like the pillar look as well. The way you shaped them is very nice and pleasing to the eye. Well done.

ctreefer 10/06/2007 07:20 AM

I agree, that's awesome. I wouldn't add any more other than the corals at this point. Pillars are great.

orchidsnfish 10/06/2007 08:03 AM

Awesome! Probably some of the coolest pillars I've seen! You must have a touch for aquascaping.

I like it too.. Its way better than Ralphie16's.

sirjohn 10/06/2007 08:45 AM

Very nice. Great job!

lilchris 10/06/2007 08:51 AM

That looks good. Are you going to put in tank refugium in that tank also?

Ardeus 10/06/2007 08:55 AM

They look good, but there's one problem: the have almost the same height. I think they would look better together with different heights:

Thanks everyone for the kind words. I can be particular and I thought I'd done alright but kept pondering this arrangement and decided to see what others thought. Hard to get pillars in a 36" tank. I guess this will be it.

I'm ready to set the tank up; however, waiting on a base to be built for my stand to raise it 8 inches. Getting kinda impatient at this point so I find myself in my garage making rock formations :)
That looks sweet, are those drilled? how are you making them? drilled LR?
Not drilled (yet). That's 4 rocks (2 for each pillar) and they fit together (stability) very well.
Are you going to put in tank refugium in that tank also?
Yes sir! But it will be in the sump. I have 2 of those refugium's now (just like the one you sent me) that will go in the return pump section, filled w/cheato.

KMP 10/06/2007 09:11 AM

ardeus, i know what your saying but the tank is 24" tall so to remove height would leave more open water than i care for. i will be learning the next phase of reefing with this tank (sps) so additional height will come from some nice stonys.

easye123 10/06/2007 09:19 AM

I love it at the same hight.. gives it a nice depth.. if you drilled the rocks you could hang the corals off the pillars.

Is it an sps or lps?mixed?

KMP 10/06/2007 09:52 AM

it will be mixed.

the pillar on the left is good; 2 rocks leaning/on one another. the pillar on the right will need to be drilled. stable as is; however, since one is on top of the other i wouldn't want to chance it.

wpnorton 10/06/2007 08:27 PM

I like the first pic. The same height looks awesome. That'll get you away from the Rock wall look most of us have ended up with. I can't wait to see the finished product!

BTW....Exotic has Purple tangs for $50. The Original school of 40 has dwindled to about 8 as of today. Very rich color and looking healthy.

thor32766 10/06/2007 08:30 PM

that is really cool should look sweet in the tank.

KMP 10/06/2007 08:55 PM

thanks.

wayne, did you get a purple tang?

KMP 10/20/2007 08:44 PM

found one more piece of rock. pillars are done. right side is 22" high. left side is 16.5" high. the rock i added to the top of the right side is a ball of weaving branches all interconnected. wish the pictures revealed how neat that looks...

I was with ol' KMP when he picked up the cap piece. I agree, KMP you do good on the reefscaping.

Are you going to wind up with any discards? Turns out I might be needing more LR very soon...

wpnorton 10/20/2007 09:06 PM

Put that thing in water allready...Your thinking about it to hard. You should go for the "Just throw them rocks in there look" like Me.

KMP 10/20/2007 09:19 PM

i actually just turned the top rock on the left pillar on it's side instead of straight up. kinda like it that way because it's wider. might need just one more rock :)

KMP 10/20/2007 10:03 PM

yep, think i'm in it for one more rock for the right pillar...
