do pistol shrimps kill inverts?

i've been seeing some empty shells lately. could the pistol be doing the killing? or is it my mystery wrasse...

Frankysreef 08/23/2007 05:30 PM

yes they kill snails and eat them

I have a pretty big mystery wrasse and i know for a fact that he eats my hermit crabs and snails.

rockindacheeks 08/23/2007 05:39 PM

ive never seen a pistol kill anything. i heard they are territorial to other shrimps tho...

(I blame my pistol shrimp for offing my cleaner shrimps)

Frankysreef 08/23/2007 06:01 PM

I had a big one.. 7 inches and he snapped my thumb once...

Also killed a lot of my snails... seen the shells near his burrow.

He bit the dust when I did an interceptor treatment.

7" shrimp is un-godly!

ezcompany 08/23/2007 07:01 PM

my pistol survived my interceptor treatment.

My pistol lives with a cbs,a dozen Nassarius Snails,a few hermits, and two cleaners in a nano..it hasn't killed anything.

Frankysreef 08/23/2007 07:35 PM

it came as a hitchhiker... I had two, and I sold one when I redid my 225 , but the other hid.

The one I sold was 7 inches and a big ugly green, nasty critter.

They do grow and get bigger.

I've had a pistol in my tank for a couple of years. Originally bought him to pair up with my yellow watchman, but sadly found out that I got the type of pistol shrimp that doesn't pair with any goby (the orange & purple one). Long story short, it had grown significantly in my tank and ate many snails, hermits, and even fishes. :sad2:

Frankysreef 08/24/2007 01:11 PM

I should have took a picture of it.

He was so big you could have eaten him.

Someone on reef central bought him for $15.

He may still have him. But he did snap my thumb once... freakin hurt.

I keep a tiger pistol shrimp with multiple hermit crabs and snails and hes done no harm to anything.
