What do you like you frags mounted on?

I always prefer live rock. It looks natural can be tucked into a hole in a rock easily and allows easy fragging later. I really do not like plugs for zoos. Plugs are a pain unless you have a grow out tank with egg crate or drilled rocks (which I don't).

I have heard of people using shells which also sounds like a good idea due to the fact that they can be cut really easy.

I like rock rubble because it looks natural. The plugs stand out on the reef and make it look bad.

When I stick plugs into my tank, they look so unnatural. I prefer rubble too.

Another vote for rubble, it looks more natural .

I also "peg" the majority of all frags in my tanks so rubble is usually a heck of a lot easier to drill and glue my thin pieces of acrylic rod to.

I am really glad you started this poll. I've been thinking about this subject for a while. I have gotten some frags lately and all have been mounted on plugs. I am very gratefull to have received the frags, but I just think that they would fit in to my tank better if they had been mounted on small pieces of rubble.

I have recently started using cow chips. If they hold together long enough I find they are a great source of food for the polyps and the tank.

About a year or so ago I was using small pieces of copper pipe that I would pick up free at a local plumbing shop-just scrap pieces. They turned a really neat color in the salt water and the pods loved to run in and out of them.

A fellow reefer also suggested recycled batteries as the length was perfect for hiding in rocks. I only did that once because the silver in the Energizer lettering would not grow coraline.

Ha! Had me going there, for a second. I have used oyster shells, clam shells, slices of live rock and rubble, crinoid and other fossils, hard coral pieces, and even coral tile. I have a few on plugs as well. Seems I get good growth on all of them. If I plan to frag out a specimen I'll use thinly sliced live rock 'cause it breaks up easily (superglue loves it too).

Is the consensus rubble because it looks natural or because its the best growth medium?

I chose rubble because it looks more natural and is easier to fit into the display

I usualy prefer live rock or rubble.

However I had actualy seen some plugs that looked fairly natural. They were basicly mushroom shaped like a 3/4" ball cut in halt with a small stem comming out of the bottom. rather than the flat top with a hole in the center type you commonly see. Now for zoo's I think these mushroom shapes would be ideal however if your into SPS's they mah not be ideal.

I like rubble too, but the frag discs aren't too bad. I got some a while back for fragging, and they seem to work OK. They're easy enough to put on rock in the tank.

I bought a couple of frags mounted on plastic plugs, and I thought the plugs were horrible.

I'll disagree. I like plugs. My tank isn't an amazing looking tank anyway, and I just find the ease of a plug for fragging off and on is worth the lack of looks.

Every frag of zoa's I've gotten on plugs end up peeling off the plug because the mat got burned from super glue and killed the attached polyps. I've noticed that if you challenge the zoos for light a little bit they extend to get to it, and those extended trunks latch onto adjacent rock, then bud off new polyps. Once they get established on the new piecejust pull the new rock away. healthy frag, just takes a little while

i like rubble personally for all the reasons listed above. With the popularity i have seen with these rock and foam walls people are placing in their tanks, are people making fake or mixed rubble for fragging yet? why these flat discs? has anyone tried this? would you be opposed if your frag came on it?

I have an advantage as I live in Fl close to the gulf. During walks on the beach I pick up interesting pieces of rock, shell and whatever for frags.
