I want to get another of this clownfish for my tank. This fish is about 2.5 inches long. should I get another one that is much smaller or similar size to this one?

phender 03/16/2007 03:19 PM

A. ocellaris (aka false percula)

Get another fish that is smaller. ~1/2 the size of your fish would be good.

Look like a A. percula to me, but no one is going to be able to tell you for sure without better pictures.

chkra_hp 03/16/2007 04:44 PM

is it normal for this fish to have top half body black nad bottom body deep orange?

Phender is right. Occelaris.
Almost identical to the female i have.

JHardman 03/16/2007 06:03 PM

I think you have a hybrid cross between A. ocellaris and A. percula.

It is unusual but not unheard of for an A. ocellaris to be as black in the first picture and can almost always be related back to a harsh host, like zoa or other strong string corals.

But based on looking at both pictures, it really looks like a cross bred fish that took a lot of A. ocellaris and a little A. percula.

Jhardman:
What do you think of this fish then?

Sorry about the crappy quality. Also, it should be noted this female hosts in a merten's anemone.

chkra_hp 03/16/2007 10:57 PM

Hmmm the guy who sold me said he think this is a true percular because the false one have less black. any advice about other way to tell? if i buy a false one and this one i have turn out to be true percular will they pair up? or vice versa. thanx

I agree, looks like a hybrid to me.

chkra_hp 03/16/2007 11:40 PM

last bump for help to find a mate for my clown

I think this is a case where if you hear hoof beats off in the distance, think horses not zebras.
The first pic was taken in the shade so it looks darker than it actually is.
Perculas don't normally have the dorsal shading your fish has, and the black on a percula has a definate shape to it where it stops and starts.
The little extra black on the fins is not all unusual for ocellaris.
Find a ocellaris mate for your ocellaris clown. :)

I agree phil. Case in point. I know my clown is ocellaris cause i raised it lol. And i think the original posters clown is a dark ocellaris.
