In general, I have been concerned about interferences and calibration. I have not used one, however, and do not yet have any first hand knowledge.

Lou Dell of American Marine has kindly sent the Pinpoint model to me, and I hope to do some tests in the near future. I let folks know when I find something out. :)

thankx,randy!!!!
please,let us know......

do u think is possable to monitor alk...?

No, I do not believe that it is possible to monitor alkalinity in such a fashion, as it is not a thing in the water, but rather the mathematical result of an acid titration.

However, a direct measure of bicarbonate would be just as useful, and may someday become available.

Scuba Dog 01/23/2005 02:29 PM

Interesting Randy...Do you think that this monitor will become confused with all the other salt ions floating around? what kind of electrode does it come with, platnum? Is it one that need to be cleaned off with some steel wool?

Randy Holmes-Farley 01/24/2005 07:32 AM

It is an ion selective electrode. The technology has been around for a long time, and is very useful for some ions, even in seawater (fluoride, for example). Whether a calcium selective electrode can be calibrated adequately and be selective enough is what I hope to investigate. Lou Dell of Amercian Marine obviously thinks it can, and he may be right. :)

Anyone knows if it can be connected to and controller? Good to stop CA reactor.

Nope....None of the aquarium controllers I know of have a Ca interface (Neptune, Octopus, IKS...). This is a new thing...I wouldn't expect a controlling capability for a long time...Plus, controlling it could be potentially dangerous because of impact to pH and alkalinity. I would like this type of monitor for just that...monitoring and to simplify my testing routine...Never to control with.

ahh... no more trying to figure out if i have exactly a half a teaspoon of the purple crystals in the little blue spoon!!!! ... hope this proves to be a good piece of equipment

tagging along too!

:)

BAJA272 01/24/2005 06:29 PM

Please let it work, I am tired of testing

foxstop 01/24/2005 06:44 PM

Very interested. Tagging along as well.

This product has raised lot's of eye brows. Will wait and see how it performs with Randy's testing.

Freed 01/24/2005 09:01 PM

mattseattle 01/24/2005 09:44 PM

so you think it's priced far above what most people would pay?

Freed 01/24/2005 09:57 PM

No, most people would pay that IF they could afford it. Way too steap IMO.

mattseattle 01/24/2005 10:02 PM

just curious....

matty612 01/24/2005 11:30 PM

i personally never tested my calcium, is it that much of a oain in the butt?

Freed 01/24/2005 11:45 PM

No, you just have to make it a habit to check it every so often just like other parameters so you know where you are.
