I can see this going over real well

ST. CHARLES, Mo. - What the ...? A St. Louis-area town is considering a bill that would ban swearing in bars, along with table-dancing, drinking contests and profane music.

City officials contend the bill is needed to keep rowdy crowds under control because the historic downtown area gets a little too lively on some nights.

City Councilman Richard Veit said he was prompted to propose the bill after complaints about bad bar behavior. He says it will give police some rules to enforce when things get too rowdy.

But some bar owners worry the bill is too vague and restrictive, saying it may be a violation of their civil rights.

Marc Rousseau, who owns bar R.T. Weilers, said he thinks the bill needs revision.

"We're dealing with adults here once again and I don't think it's the city's job or the government's job to determine what we can and cannot play in our restaurant," Rousseau said.

The proposal would ban indecent, profane or obscene language, songs, entertainment and literature at bars.

A meeting to discuss the proposal is set for Jan. 14.

Ha, bars with UA's, who'd a thought

A.T.T.R 01/08/2008 03:51 PM

should be voted on

but only people who sohuld be alowed to vote are the ones who frequent bars

i could easily see all the old folks or ppl who hate bars agreeing

same should be said for alot of things.. only ppl who should vote are those who it effects

And once you get into THAT can of worms....define swearing.

Had an older friend once send a schoolkid to the office for saying [not to her] that something was "a lot of bull." In her era, in her area of the country---yep, you guessed it, always understood to be the whole expression. The kid was wide-eyed and totally perplexed.

Not to mention, "bloody nuisance" was a common expression in Oklahoma. The Brits take it, I understand, rather more strongly.

old timey swearing was on the body.. blood n such

the body being sacred to certain beliefs...

If it aims to legislate behavior within bars I can't see it surviving it's first court challenge.

Pfffffft! I think all of us here can agree that nobody's going to want to hang out in a place where you can't swear.

i was going to say that, but i figured someone would get ban happy and do away with me.

i can see it now.... monitors mingling through the crowd, listening for swears; agreements being signed at the door, guaranteeing good behavior; bar employees being paid to listen to demo cd's of all bands allowed to play.... yep, that would be a great idea! what a waste of energy. are we really becoming this sensitive? if the world frightens you that much don't go out in it. stay home where you'll be safe from all these unbearable words. but don't turn on the tv or the radio, don't listen to any cd's, and for the love of all that is holy, whatever you do don't watch a movie!!

If that passes, I can picture the night before it goes into effect. Bars should have "Happy Damn Hour" where you get all your drinks at a discount as long as you order them with a swear!
