Colt coral or Kenya Tree coral? (pic)
 

I've been trying to find out info on exactly what the difference is between colt coral and kenya tree coral online without any luck..... What is the difference between them? How can you tell them apart? :rolleyes: Better yet, what did I just buy?

This frag was $5 at the LFS......... Either way i'm happy with it, but i would like to know what it is and how best to care for it.

I've heard that kenya trees rely more on outside feeding than light as a food source, any comments?

I don't think most leathers need that much care. Low to medium flow and almost any light setting should be good. But if you really want it to thrive, some kind of Kent coral food would be good, but I wouldn't bother unless you have other corals that you want to grow and spread.

Cool, i know they spread like crazy, but that's what i'm looking for! So far my two frags are doing well, one was closed for a day and shed something, but now its open and happy again. I think they are already bigger....... but it could be my imagination

Looks like a Kenya tree to me but an easy way to tell is Colt corals are very slimy to the touch, Kenya trees are more dry and leathery feeling. Don't bother wasting money and polluting your water by dumping goop in the tank to feed it. Good light and moderate current is all they need.

Thats a kenya, mine ate cyclopeze (target fed) and tripled in size in a month, then i cut back on the cyclopeze feedings from once a day to every third for water quality issues and it started dropping limbs like crazy (now I have a bunch of kenya trees)...This leads me to believe that they thrive with additional feedings and that once the feedings subsided it shed some extra bulk to adjust...It was pretty cool to see this happen.

So if you want hundreds of them just feed it like crazy for a couple months and then just abruptly stop...The tree looks pretty gnarly when it sheds, it kinda pinches off its limbs, but the babies already have a foot when they drop and some of mine attached within hours...mabye you can keep a little pile of rubble around the base of the kenya so that you can move these guys to wherever you want or you can trade them out easier...
