Yep, works great as spagetti sauce! High in protein

luke33 01/09/2008 11:35 PM

Flyguy i think i may see your problem. So you can't lower your water leveler right as your water in your sump looks pretty high. From the color of your skimmate it looks like your skimming to wet. But its skimming well by the looks.

OnlyCrimson 01/09/2008 11:48 PM

Flyguy, you could always raise your skimmer on a little platform or acrylic or something.

Whats up old buddy!

flyguy7150 01/10/2008 12:13 AM

Well guess i'll get to work on making a stand, think i have some eggcrate laying around. Where should i set it? 8-10"?

luke33 01/10/2008 08:18 AM

Yep, 8" is nice

MSU Fan 01/10/2008 10:35 AM

So I bored out the volute, modded the venturi intake like you suggested, and added 2 layers of enkamat to the NW on my NW150. Before I did all that, I tested my wattage on my Killawatt: 42-43w. After I did all that, 45-46w. I expected it to be higher than it is, so I did I do everything right? I do think that I am getting more bubbles (I don't have a dwyer).

Also, how much are you supposed to bore out the volute? I am just nervous about going through the other side...

luke33 01/10/2008 10:40 AM

I bored out quite a bit of the part that goes into the pump as it was so restrictive and as much as i could on the other part's. You just have to be careful cuz its easy to drill through the other side. Sounds like you did it right. You have a slit on your hose adapter facing the impeller right?

MSU Fan 01/10/2008 10:44 AM

Yeah, I did it exactly like you did, parts and all :) . Do you think that only 2 layers on my NW will be ok? I cut the tines off the top layer of NW, and added 2 layers of enkamat and zip tied like you did. I know that it is still breaking in, but I guess I sort of expected the wattage to go up more...

Is this the octo 2000 pump?

luke33 01/10/2008 10:49 AM

When you pull in more air your wattage generally will go down or stay around the same. So a 2-4w swing isn't really a big deal imo. If it went up 10-20 i'd be more concerned. If it looks like the other 150's on this thread i'm sure its pulling more air. Did you have to lower your water leveler?

MSU Fan 01/10/2008 10:56 AM

I have the gate mod too, so not really. I think that it is still breaking in, so I had to open it up more at first...I have to keep an eye on it so it doesn't just pull liquid.

Thanks Luke, appreciate the help and the write up, it was extremely informative and helpful!

Yes Teog, this is an Octo 2000 pump.

luke33 01/10/2008 11:04 AM

Anytime, and about the wattage. The wattage will go up as more flow enters the pump when you take the restrictive venturi off and boar out teh elbo. This does cause a wattage increase. But when you pull more air into the pump it decreases that wattage so if your almost identical thats good. Many times you can even pull below your previous wattage as well.

impur is that a nw200 or 150?? How does you get the bubbles to come out the cup like that?? Mine just like breathes at the top. Like it just goes up and down. Is my tank water really clean or something?? Also does length of the airline hose matter?? Is it better to get air from outside the sump??

Its the NW200. I didn't do anything to get the foam like that. I did the mods luke33 suggested, but i didn't cut the needles off, i just added 3 layers on top of the original needlewheel. You could just have a clean tank. The length of the airline does matter, the longer it is the more static pressure to get the air to the skimmer. I have to bring outside air into my skimmer due to excess CO2 in my house, this helps keep my pH stable and above 8.0. If I were to shorten the airline it would increase my skimmers performance.

Mr. Bojangles you can see the waterline in this pic. Its right under the black wire from the octo pump

I'd say my skimmer sits in 8-10" of water.

flyguy7150 01/10/2008 04:20 PM

well a made an eggcrate stand...

The skimmer now sits 9" below the water line...Thinking of making it so it sits 8"

impur 01/10/2008 04:38 PM

You'll be fine with that at 9"

teog 01/10/2008 05:17 PM

Well my wife just called me and stated the skimmer is overflowing and water is everywhere. :(

Since doing this mod, my water level is going up and down in the skimmer. For a couple of hours with the ball valve completley open the the water level is too high up in the collection cup, almost spilling over immediatly. Then for no reason its not even too the neck of the skimmer. I have yet to get any skimmate or foam production.

If I close the ball valve just a little the water is overflowing the collection cup . Could 3 layers of enkamat be too much for the dual recirc 150?

My airline hose's are 18 in in lenth and connect to the silencers.

Thanks

impur 01/10/2008 05:52 PM

Sounds like its getting too much water. Do you have an airflow meter?

You might try restricting the water coming in a little and see how it does.

teog 01/10/2008 06:22 PM

I have no airflow meter. Im running an ehiem 1250 which is rated for 317gpm. And didnt have this problem prior to the mods.
Where do I get a airflow meter?
