Same with my Clown Tang nothing like what people say hes the most peaceful fish in my tank but can stand his ground especially when the humbug attacks.

"he enjoys being stroked too "

Ive never heard of anybody petting their fish :) is that considered normal by any means? or is it rare for them to be so friendly?

my puppy would just LOVE to play with the clownfish :) and by play I mean eat.

My A. Japonicus, got him a few weeks ago, just moved him into the 75 gallon display about four days ago. He's a pig! He's at least 4" long

BTW thanks for the link on the article on these guys, I found out shortly after I purchased that there was a big difference, but I didn't know if I had my hands on the hardy one or the finicky one.

It's not "normal" exactly, or common by any means, CORAL magazine did an article about "the need to clean" a few years back. They related this behavior to cleaning behavior. They had a picture of a baby napoleon wrasse (22 inches!) in a coral export facility that would offer his loins to passer byes. Pretty hillarious!

thor32766 01/09/2008 12:39 PM

my old vlamingi used to let me pet her. She is now in a LFS tank and shes huge. I also have my orange shoulder and he loves to be petted. He will actually come to top the tank and hover letting me pet him.

ReefTECK 01/09/2008 01:07 PM

Amazing!

I wish my fish would let me get that close to them! I guess I have a Z. flavescens at work that I can catch by hand quite easily, he's just used to me distributing the NORI for him, and has otherwise total disregard for me as being dangerous. He nibbles krill out of my fingers too, I'm gonna try to pet him next time I go to work!

Only have one tang, a powder blue that could be a hybrid with a powder brown or whitecheek

Bad News - !

Unfortunately i came home today to find my clown tang laying on his side, so i tried feeding garlic soaked food and he didn;t eat any of it and 2 hours later he was dead.

My own fault for putting him in a tank way too small for him and not researching a fish before i bought it.

Reeftanks6 01/09/2008 05:36 PM

Sorry to hear that great tangs by the way

They recommend about 150 gallon + i bought him before i knew anything about tangs.

RyanBrucks 01/10/2008 06:13 PM

Wow I didn't know they needed so much space. But I haven't seriously started planning my stocking plan yet.

I'm planning a 220. Are there any tangs that wouldn't work in that? I really love tangs and anthias. I know that I will be housing tridacnids so I'm limiting my fish variety a bit. I might try getting multiple tangs of the same color, but limiting the different species. Will this work well with most tangs, are are some best kept alone (ie, the only sohal).

RyanBrucks 01/10/2008 06:17 PM

vendors showing their true stripes......

marinedepot says 55g+ for a clown tang
liveaquaria says 150+.

Guess we know who is telling the truth :)

Reeftanks6 01/10/2008 06:21 PM

yea you could do a lot of differnt tangs in a 220
