Wow! Congrats Ryan! :) I had something typed up and then it said the thread has been closed. I tried to go back to see if I could resend the post but to no avail. Oh well, gotta run. The Hawkeyes are playing the Illinois. Should be a fun game to watch.

Nice pics Kurt, the ORA tort has its polyps out just not fully exteneded, you can see them in your pic! We forgot to take a picture of my tank after we got rocks in, ill take some tonight when i get in!

slovan
09/23/2006, 11:55 AM
Hey Kurt,
I think I was talking about Chris' corals when you asked me about lighting. All your corals are medium to lower light corals. You can put the two ORA corals up higher if you had to but keep the bonsai in moderate to lower light. Otherwise it'll lighten up on you.

Fusch13
09/23/2006, 11:56 AM
Hey sone, how about my corals, where should i place the Bali tricolor? Validia? And Birdnest!

Hey Kurt, did you hear from the guy on the 125s?

Kurt03
09/23/2006, 11:59 AM
All i know on the 125's is im 8th in line. He said he would call me back. Havent heard anything yet.

slovan
09/23/2006, 12:02 PM
Hey Ryan,
I think your corals will be fine just about anywhere. I have always had the valida up high and have not had any problems. The birdsnest can be anywhere you have room. If I had to guess, I would say moderate to lower lighting. The Bali tri-color has been kept in moderate lighting and has done well. Haven't been daring enough to move it anywhere else.

Kurt03
09/23/2006, 12:02 PM
Hey ryan, i think some of the pics came out ok that i took of your tank. Do you want me to post them here or email them to you or something?

Kurt03
09/23/2006, 12:25 PM
sone, someones asking where i got the frags. would you like me to post that i got them from you? or just pm the guy? lol idk how many pms your going to get. Heres the thread if you want to.

Thanks for the kind words and free pub Kurt. Unfortunately I don't have anymore of the Garf's purple bonsai left for sale. Actually have a waiting list for it. :) I just wish I had more than one mother colony!

Kurt03
09/23/2006, 12:35 PM
no problem, the least i could do. Thanks again for the garf bonsai. I know i almost didnt get it lol
I gave them your name LOL let me know how many pms you get. How long of a waiting list do you have?

Fusch13
09/23/2006, 12:37 PM
email them to me, that way i can put them into my photobucket album

slovan
09/23/2006, 12:44 PM
I only have 5 people on it and that's about all I can really frag about every 3 months. It's not a fast grower hence the low distribution of the coral. I'll have to creat a few more colonies so they'll always be available. Have you seen what Atlantis Aquarium wants for the frag? Check out the size too. Yikes! Bonsai frag (http://www.atlantisaquarium.net/frags2.html) So what do you have Kurt? A $200 frag? :D

Kurt03
09/23/2006, 12:47 PM
ok sone, did i ever tell you I LOVE YOU MAN lol, in a non gay way of course ;)

The blue tort is putting polyps out alot better now. It was making me nervous this morning.

I will send the pics in a min ryan, what size would you like them?

Fusch13
09/23/2006, 12:48 PM
Haha thats hilarious, also Sone we tool one of there picks of this birdnest i love and you can tell theyve used some kind photo editor....dont know if this is the case on all there stuff but kinda made me go, ok dont know if i would order from them!

Fusch13
09/23/2006, 12:50 PM
whatever...just not so big i cant download them..lol I think i got all my pvc coming, but of course i forget another 3/4 tee for after i tee off the mainline, im going to go two outlets instead of the one i have!

slovan
09/23/2006, 12:51 PM
Hey Kurt, is this supposed to be like a Bud Light commercial? :D I'm glad your corals are doing well. The ORA blue tort grows fairly quickly so you should have a mini colony within a year if your parameters are good.

Kurt03
09/23/2006, 12:52 PM
yea, that would prob be best. What return pump do you have?

Kurt03
09/23/2006, 12:53 PM
Was just wondering, just how slow of a grower is the garf bonsai? seems like with the limited amount ppl are selling it must grow pretty slow.

Atlantis have some of the nicest corals online. I'm sure if the pictures were ever altered, they might have been done to reflect the actual color of the coral. Sometimes it's just hard to capture the true colors. That's why you always read on here that pics doesn't do it justice when people talk about corals.

I've bought several things from them and wouldn't hesitate to do so again. Albeit a little pricey but you do get quality stuff from them. Nice people to deal with also.

slovan
09/23/2006, 12:58 PM
The bonsai took about 1 1/2 years to grow out before I started fragging it. I could've done it sooner but wanted it to grow out more.

Kurt03
09/23/2006, 01:03 PM
what size peice did you start with? And how big is the colony now?

Blue torts polyps are out much better!

Hey Chris,
I was reading around on wetwebmedia.com and they are saying that for my size tank, I should do 2 - 1" drains. If I remember correctly, the overflow box had two prefilters, that sat on top of two flex hoses, that ran separately to the sump. Does that mean we should have done 2 drains? LOL.

Kurt03
09/23/2006, 02:04 PM
What size tank is it? Sorry i forget what you said it was.

doowain9999
09/23/2006, 02:16 PM
72 gallon

Kurt03
09/23/2006, 02:37 PM
a 1 inch drain can flow 600gph i think. So it all depends on how much you want going to your sump. Theres a drain calculator on the main page here.
Heres a link to it
http://reefcentral.com/calc/drain.php

doowain9999
09/23/2006, 02:43 PM
Cool. Thanks.

The guys there say that although it's rated at 600gph, it realistically flows at half that, depending upon how many 90s, 45s, or how wide open you have it. If you slow it down (?) and don't run it at maximum, it's quieter and safer too?

30mini
09/23/2006, 02:48 PM
Well, technically it can be quiter, but mine is almost silent and I have it set up with a durso on the outside! We can do another one anytime you want! I could do one on Monday night if you wanted to!! Let me know, and we can set something up

30mini
09/23/2006, 02:49 PM
You don't want to restrict drains. That's a no, no, and trouble waiting to happen!! You only restrict returns!!!

doowain9999
09/23/2006, 04:56 PM
I just got home with the bulkheads (I bought two just in case) and I put it in. I thought it would be a tighter fit. There is probably a 1/4 inch between the threads and the perimeter of the hole before you twist it down and seal it. Is this normal?

I think we may want to do another one. How do you want to go about it on Monday? Do you want me to stop by your place? I work in Tri County and get off at 4.

Yea, Dewain, that is normal! The gasket is what seals it!! The bulkhead will be okay when you fill it up!
I don't get off until 5... so I'm not sure what you want to do about that! I won't be home until around 5:30, and that's the earliest I would be able to do anything. If you want to wait for the weekend, I would be able to come out to your house and do it that way. Which, may be a little better, b/c then I could help with plumbing if you wanted!

Kurt03
09/23/2006, 11:44 PM
ryan, i like the anemone pic. Idk why the background ended up black like that but it looks cool. Id be willing to help take a look at your calcium reactor if you like. Im pretty good about taking things apart and putting them back together. Idk much about them but i can at least try. And yes i know its real :P i was just saying it was soooo colorfull, i like it!
Let me know about the calcium reactor, i need to come over and look at that rock anyways. What day is best for you?

WHO DEY!!! What a game...man I love TJ and Madieu. And how good is Jonathan Joseph gonna be. WOW.

Chris, I gotta take the pup back to the vet tomorrow for his checkup. I should be done about 5 or 5:30. I could run the aquarium to your house afterwards. It's not a big deal! I'm gonna try to get the water in there this week, so I can get that cycle going. YOU HAVE ME WAY TOO EXCITED after telling me that it'd be ok to get a porky. I ran the idea of the tank in the wall by the wife and she thinks it's awesome and is all for it. Now I just gotta find a good deal!

09/24/2006, 07:25 PM
Tragedy has struck!! Came home from work today, and saw that ALL of my new coral is totally white!! Bleached! Was perfect when I left for work this morning... came home... gone!! WHAT THE F*CK Happened?? I am totally beside myself, that all of that beautiful coral is dead!!!

30mini
09/24/2006, 07:35 PM
What kills me, is that ALL of my other corals are fine! Zoo's are opened up beautifully, and the shrooms are open great too! But the SPS that I have... GONE? Even that Cap you gave me Ryan is gone!! WHAT IN THE HELL IS WRONG HERE??? Temp is fine, params are normal, and salinity is perfect! WHAT THE???

30mini
09/24/2006, 07:35 PM
All of this happened in less than 8 hours! Everything was perfect this morning... great PE... then something happened! What, I don't know!!!

slovan
09/24/2006, 07:39 PM
Sorry to hear Chris. :( Keep us posted if you find out what went wrong. Do you run any additional equipment like a calcium reactor, kalk reactor or anything that might've overdosed something?

30mini
09/24/2006, 07:48 PM
No, nothing! I add everything myself, and even do 3 waterchanges a month!! The only thing that I have running is my sump, fuge, and skimmer!! The skimmer is producing good skimmate, the fuge is running rampant with the cheato and pods, but why did the SPS die??? This makes no sense to me at all!! I have a mag 5 running almost fully open, so I'm getting close to 20x turnover in my tank! You saw the PE that I had yesterday! It was the same this morning! Now that I'm home... skeletons! I am sooo mad right now I could throw this tank out the window!!!

30mini
09/24/2006, 07:53 PM
I really hope I'm not having a tank crash! That would really kill me!!! I don't see where I don't have enough light for them... that doesnt make sense. My temp hovers around 80 at all times... and my nitrates, nitrites, and ammonia are all at 0!!! My skimmer does a great job, and is constantlyrunning, and the cheato I have is running rampant!! I top off almost every other day with less than a gallon of water... granted it's not RO, but it's aged tap with conditioners in it! What am I doing wrong???

slovan
09/24/2006, 07:58 PM
Wow, this one stumps me also. Not sure what it could be if you say all the parameters are fine, your tank temperature feels normal. Lighting shouldn't be an issue since you have T5's running.

What are all the paramters that you test for? Do you check for alkalinity?

30mini
09/24/2006, 08:00 PM
I want to hit my head against a wall right now! This is just the worst thing to happen in my tank since I started it!!! I mean, I have taken on corals that were close to dead, and brought them back to health, and took them back to jacks and sold them for cheaper than before... but to have HEALTHY corals, beautiful corals, having doing great in the morning, and dead in the afternoon is something else! Just kill menow... put me out of my misery!!

Kurt03
09/24/2006, 08:01 PM
Wow sorry to hear that chris. You had that cap for a while right? Im guessing they RTN'd for some reason? What is everything testing at right now? If you have tests at home test there and take some to work also and test it.

30mini
09/24/2006, 08:03 PM
I tested for everything! Alk, Ph, temp, trites, trates, even Calcium! I'm running a 175 W Halide, Kurt has the t-5's! It's a 14K. I don't have any actinic supplement! I love the lighting, and don't really want to get rid of it! The only thing I want to do is raise it up a little so I can get under there and work on corals. It's about 10" above the water now, butwould make it closer to 15 if I had to. Man this sucks!!

30mini
09/24/2006, 08:04 PM
Everything has been stable! Nothing has swung at all. My zoa's are great!!

30mini
09/24/2006, 08:05 PM
I did that this morning... that's where I'm telling you all my params! My calcium was even at 450! I don't understand this! Something is up, and I don't know what it is!

Kurt03
09/24/2006, 08:11 PM
I dont think its the lighting as the blue cap would have bleached a while ago i would think.

Kurt03
09/24/2006, 08:16 PM
Did you clean your hands/arm when you put the frags in? Could have had something on them.

Kurt03
09/24/2006, 08:25 PM
The mantis couldnt have anything to do with it could he?

Fusch13
09/24/2006, 08:32 PM
Did walter take a bite into a ZOO.....could be toxic, but that would effect the other zoo's or would it? Hmm...kinda puzzled myself...Chris when you figure it out, let me know, i have the second piece of birdnest i can get you, i can also frag some more of the blue polyp, not a big thing.....also i can get you one thing of the valida, and you know how precious that is to me! Let me know!

30mini
09/24/2006, 08:32 PM
That is my last thought on what could have happened. He likes to roam, and could have been hard on the corals. He did knock over the Tenius and the other two that weren't glued down. I always make sure I have clean hands before putting my hand into any tank! My only thought is what you said Kurt.... Walter. I dont know... I am just beside myself, and don't really know for sure! It could have been the rock though too... just was out of water for too long, and something happened! Ryan, how is all your stuff?? You have more rock in yours than in mine

Kurt03
09/24/2006, 08:54 PM
How long was the rock out of water? I thought it was in buckets or something. Was there maybe a sponge on one of the rocks? I think some of them can die if they touch air for even a short time. I will prob have a green digi that we could test your tank with a piece of it before you put something else in it.
Ryan you gave me two pieces of that blue cap so i can give one to chris unless you want to chip a piece off yours.

doowain9999
09/24/2006, 09:36 PM
I took the rock out of the main tank on Sunday and put it immediately into that rubbermaid tub. I put the water from the tank in with it and two jets to circulate the water. I drained the water from it on Friday and headed straight for Chris's house. It was out of the water maybe 45 minutes if you include the time it took to take it inside and get it into Ryan's aquarium. I don't know how long it was before you got your rock in your tank, but it was at least 3 hours if you take the 35 minutes it took to drive to Ryan's and add on the time we were there. (I got there at 6:40 and we left at about 9:15 I think.) There weren't any sponges on the rock that I know of. I mean, some of that rock hadn't even been in her tank long enough to get coralline.

This is really strange man. If it were the rock, why wouldn't the rest of your corals died as well?

Fusch13
09/25/2006, 05:24 AM
Yeah, i would have to say it isnt the rock, if your tank went into cycle because of the rock, all your coral would be on a downhill spiral, just not sps! Plus, all my sps are doing well!

Fusch13
09/25/2006, 05:53 AM
Dang it Odell, what is the boys problem, its time to grow the f##k up!

30mini
09/25/2006, 07:00 AM
Yea, I don't think it was the rock either... I'm just trying not to blame Walter, you know?? I love the guy, and he just doesn't like the SPS corals!! He is out roaming a lot at night, and I know that I saw him up by the SPS, and he knocked it over too. I know that he stressed it out a lot, and that's probably what caused it to go downhill!! Kurt, let me get rid of Walter before we try anything else in there!! When he is gone, I'm going totally revamp my tank, and make it look a lot nicer!!! Now, anyone want a mantis?

Fusch13
09/25/2006, 07:02 AM
haha.....not me....like my sps too much! I cant think of anything else which would cause that!

09/25/2006, 07:30 AM
haha, i tried that in beginning, but found its just better to let her rant, and release!

HAHA! You put a sock in the wrong drawer and she's mad? Well, she is pregnant... so, it's understandable.

I think it may need to wait till Friday if you can wait that long! I just need some time to figure out what went wrong in my tank, and run some tests to make sure! I'll definately be up on Friday though!! And then we can maybe do some plumbing too if you have the bulkheads and such!
Did you get that bulkhead on fine Dewain? It should have been drilled right at the right level!

doowain9999
09/25/2006, 08:31 AM
Yeah, it was perfect. I didn't have to cut that wood strip like you thought I might.

I can't do it Friday. I'm leaving after work for Gatlinburg. I got a chalet for our anniversary which is Sunday! If the cabin's a rockin' don't come a knockin'!!

30mini
09/25/2006, 08:32 AM
haha! Heard that one man! Then it may have to wait till next monday if it can! I'm just beside myself about this coral, and I really want to figure out what happened!

doowain9999
09/25/2006, 08:37 AM
If you wouldn't be opposed to me borrowing the bit, I could drop by and pick it up whenever. Maybe Tuesday when I stop by Jack's to get the crushed coral? If you don't want to loan it out or you think I might bust my aquarium :) , I understand. I did install tile throughout my house, so I'm at least a little bit handy. LOL.

30mini
09/25/2006, 08:40 AM
Yea, I can bring the bit if you want to try! Just be carefull, don't apply pressure, and have a constant waterflow going through it! I will tell you this, when you start, make a small grinding mark at an angle so you get a groove to set the bit down in. Let the drill do the work, you only need to hold it upright and straight!

Have you guys seen the salt study preliminary results from eric borneman? Its not completely done but theres posts about the data that is done so far. Check it out! You can tell a big diffrence just by looking at the seperate tanks, i cant wait to see the actual data.

Pretty interesting! I may have to try some Red Sea b/c that's what we have at the store. I'll try it out and give you guys some results. Ryan, I know you tried it, but I think I may give it a shot only b/c I can get it for farily cheap, and we don't have any RC at the store right now. Gonna do some major w/c's over the next couple of days! I'll be keeping your bucket if you don't mind for a while. That will help me with some of my W/C's, b/c I'll mix two buckets of water, and do a larger change!

Kurt03
09/25/2006, 09:27 AM
How much is redsea there? I thought it was pretty surprising that IO was one of the lowest ones. Im ordering some salifert test kits soon, anyone need any?

30mini
09/25/2006, 09:33 AM
I'm not positive, but I think it is around the same as IO from what I remember. The bags aren't as big, and I'm not sure we get buckets of it. I'll check tomorrow when I go in though

Kurt03
09/25/2006, 09:42 AM
Well if you get it you will have to test everything in it mixed to 1.026 and i can test some normal IO and ryan can test reefcrystals if he has some left.

30mini
09/25/2006, 09:44 AM
Yea, I'll do that! I need to do some major revamping at the moment! Maybe a change in salt will help? I don't really know though!

Kurt03
09/25/2006, 09:50 AM
What salt are you using?

30mini

Reef Crystals

I may have someone taking Walter if her peacock doesn't make it! I may be getting some corals in trade for him! This will be good, b/c then I'll be able to do some in tank work without him trying to kill my hand! It will also give me more room for scaping and such!

09/25/2006, 10:46 AM

30mini

Yea, it's all good!

Kurt03
09/25/2006, 11:42 AM
Have you tested your mag before chris? Im not sure but i think that can cause coral bleaching and IO is low in it to begin with (i think)

30mini
09/25/2006, 11:45 AM
How could my mag cause bleaching? You and Ryan both have mag pumps, and don't have anything like that at all

Kurt03
09/25/2006, 11:47 AM
i meant magnesium. Sorry didnt feel like typing it out :)

30mini
09/25/2006, 11:49 AM
Ahhh... haven't checked for that! You do make a good point on that, but why would the cap be fine, and then I add the rock, and new coral... and then BANG, bleached?

doowain9999
09/25/2006, 11:51 AM
Hey Chris, is there any chance that I could stop by tonight and pick up the bit? After I take the pup to the vet, I'm gonna go get the plumbing. The wife won't be home tonight, so if I could knock this out tonight, it'd be perfect.

Kurt03
09/25/2006, 11:52 AM
idk, maybe that just nudged it over the edge? Did the cap look ok before this? Did it lighten up at all? How long was it in the tank?

30mini
09/25/2006, 11:52 AM
Sure! Where is your vet at?? I'm in fairfield, close to Bypass 4

30mini
09/25/2006, 11:54 AM
The cap was in the tank for about 2 weeks prior. It did lighten up before, but nothing drastic! When I got it, it wasn't fully colored to what Ryan's mother colony looked like. I think b/c it was at the bottom for a while. I'm just totally stumped on this whole thing!

Kurt03
09/25/2006, 11:57 AM
could you see any growth on it? Problem there is switching tanks the cap was in then 2weeks it prob wouldn't have grown much either way.
Test your magnesium and let us know what its at. Just throwing ideas out there to try and help you find the problem.

30mini
09/25/2006, 11:58 AM
Yea, I may take a water sample up to work on Tuesday and check my levels for everything then!

30mini
09/25/2006, 11:59 AM
The cap didn't grow at all... but in 2 weeks, I didn't really expect it to!

doowain9999
09/25/2006, 12:03 PM
Yeah, that's perfect man! I'm going to the Home Depot on the bypass.

30mini
09/25/2006, 12:03 PM
Yea! It's just odd for a coral to be fine for over 24 hrs, have great PE, then less than 8 hours later, gone! Totally bleached... not an ounce of color on it!!

30mini
09/25/2006, 12:04 PM
Yea, you would have to come down to where the Bypass meets Rt. 4, and then go across to Ross Rd, and go up and I'm in the complex on the right side

doowain9999
09/25/2006, 12:26 PM
That works. What time should I stop by and what's the address?

30mini
09/25/2006, 12:32 PM
I get home around 5:30, so really anytime after that is fine. The address is 15 Brittany Ln., 45014. It's real easy to get to my place from bypass 4!

09/25/2006, 12:35 PM

Hey Chris,
Are your SPS corals a total loss? What all did you have?

30mini
09/25/2006, 12:47 PM
Yea, a total loss :( I had the Tenius, Birdsnest, Green Spongodes, and the blue porites

30mini
09/25/2006, 12:48 PM
and the cap from Ryan. My zoas are fine... at least as of this morning they were... and last night... but I'll see when I get home too

slovan
09/25/2006, 12:57 PM
Sounds more like they rtn'd on you. When a coral bleaches, there's a good chance that it'll bounce back but not when they rtn on you.

Anyway I have all those corals in my tank if they survive the tank transfer I did this past weekend. If you ever want to try again, I'll have them and will help you with what I can. It sucks to lose your corals and would hate to see you throw your tank out the window.

30mini
09/25/2006, 01:00 PM
Yea, I think that is what they did. I have seen a slow bleaching before, and have even saved corals from my job that were bleaching and on the way out! I would love to have some more corals from you, but I want to get rid of walter, revamp my tank to get some better aquascaping, and maybe raise up the lighting a little and add more fans to the canopy. I have a little work ahead of me, and will let you know when I'm ready to get some more from you!!

Yea it sounds like they RTN'ed on you. This can happen without any warning. It was probably from adding the rock and the frags so close together. All it takes is a change of anything and it can happen. I would let things settle down for a few weeks and then try some digitata or something cheap and see how they do before adding anything expensive.

30mini
09/25/2006, 05:21 PM
Yea, Thanks lonnie! I was planning on getting rid of Watler at some point soon, and making way for a nice reef tank! It's nice how it is now, but I need some good cleaning to be done on the inside! I'll have to let things settle down, then get something cheap, or free from work that is almost dead and try to bring back to life!

Kurt03
09/25/2006, 07:38 PM
I can give you a small frag of a digi if you want. I have two that are growing pretty fast. One real light green/yellowish and one purple one. I will frag the green one for you so you can try it after your tank settles. It would be a good cheap way to test the tank.

Good to hear Chris. I'm glad you want to get right back up and try it again. It's a lot of work but think of it as an opportunity to upgrade or do things that you didn't do the first time around.

I just did my big tank transfer this past weekend and it was quite a chore! I got it done but I still have to tear down the 120 and clean it. It's been a lot of work but I hope it's worth it in the end. Here's a couple pics I took yesterday.

WOW!! That is VERY nice man! I love it!! Wish I had a tank that big!! I would try my best at it just like you have it now! Love the two Islands!! really adds to the the tank!
I am going to "start over" but not really! My levels are excellent, and I have great quality... the only thing is the algea that I have growing on the rocks. B/c I can't keep snails or crabs, it gets pretty bad. I don't have a detritus problem b/c of all the bristleworms, and the pods i have... So, maybe when everything is done, and walter is gone, I'll have a tank that is at least 10% as nice as yours!

doowain9999
09/25/2006, 08:11 PM
2 holes down....and the tank is still intact. Gonna have to touch up the blue on the back now, but that I can deal with! Thanks Chris.

Got the plumbing at Home Depot. Talked to the guy in plumbing for a while about tanks. He has a 265 with sharks and rays, a 125 reef, and a 65 hex seahorse tank. Unreal.

Hi Kurt,
I'm always looking for frags! Unfortunately I need to be more selective and let the ones I have grow out some. I could've sworn everything looked packed in the 120. Now everything looks so small. Oh well, give a year and it'll grow in.

30mini
09/25/2006, 08:41 PM
Good to know you didnt break the tank Dewain!! Dry fit your plumbing before you glue! Trust me on that one man!!

30mini
09/25/2006, 08:43 PM
Hey Sone, I may have some Eagle Eye frags soon! You want any of those? I even have some green skirts w/silver centers doing excellent too!! Let me know if you want any! I'll send'em your way after I get Kurt and Ryan taken care of!!

slovan
09/25/2006, 09:06 PM
No problem Chris. Do you have any pics of the eagle eyes? There's so many varieties out there so I just have to find one that I like. If you don't have any pics, I'm sure Kurt could take some nice ones. He did the other day. I didn't think I could get my corals to look that good! :)

30mini
09/25/2006, 09:14 PM
This is the best one I have right now. You can see the little Aiptasia problem I have in there! That will be taken care of when Walter leaves... I'll get an army of peps in there to wipe them out!

slovan
09/25/2006, 09:52 PM
Hi Kurt,
I run 2) 400W SE XM 20K's on a standard magnetic ballast on each end of the tank. The middle is a 250W DE Phoenix 14K on an electronic ballast. Surprisingly the Phoenix 14K looks a littlbe bit more blue than the XM bulbs.

Chris....i have my plumbing done, but the 1/2" return, i was thinking, of possibly a spraybar....think you could help me with that...i need to get a threaded 1/2" fitting and the some 1/2" pvc to make the spray bar, and i assume a 1/2" cap?

Fusch13
09/26/2006, 06:14 AM
Yep, im back, and not one word about all new rock in tank and corals...it was more cleaning haha..

30mini
09/26/2006, 07:01 AM
Yea, I can help you with a spray bar!! That's easy! Just need 4 different sized drill bits, the larger being near the end that has the cap, and the small being near the output side! We could make one the whole length of the side of your tank!

30mini
09/26/2006, 07:03 AM
That's not really a deal on those zoo's ryan! That's way too much in shipping to have something that I already have shipped here! Just give me a little more time to grow these eagle eyes out! You will get some, don't worry! I'm getting ready to put a piece of rubble under the colony I have now, so, I'll put three under it and give them to the guys that I owe some to!

Fusch13
09/26/2006, 07:10 AM
yeah, since the 1/2" threaded outlet for locline didnt fit in the 1/2" pvc, ive decided to do a spraybar along the left side of the tank, which i think will be better in long run....

Fusch13
09/26/2006, 07:10 AM
did anyone show interest in Walter?

30mini
09/26/2006, 07:13 AM
Yea, I have interest in him. If someone on Cincyreef's female peacock dies, then she will take walter, but I also have someone in New York that wants to buy him. I don't really want to ship him to this girl, b/c she is kind of a nasy BI*CH to me all the time on the mantis forums! I'm hoping I can sell him locally!!

30mini
09/26/2006, 07:13 AM
How did the 1/2" lockline not fit into the 1/2" PVC??? I have done that before!

Fusch13
09/26/2006, 07:15 AM
i have no idea, but the 1/2" locline fitting whic i got, does not screw into the threaded 1/2" pvc i bought, not like the 3/4" i got! Baffled me too, i was like you got to be kidding me...temporarly i have a clear hose inserted into pvc to flow into tank..talk about ghetto!

Fusch13
09/26/2006, 07:16 AM
Haha, why in the world would you sell him to her, why would she think you would, if shes been nasty to you! lol

Fusch13
09/26/2006, 07:19 AM

09/26/2006, 07:23 AM
yeah Kurt needs to come get this rock too....ill have to find out when wife is working!

30mini
09/26/2006, 07:24 AM
Nope, no clue as to what it is! I brought home a cup coral from work that wasn't doing so good, and it's doing great! I'm performing a small test today, where I don't turn the lights on at all, just have the ambient room light... heard it allows the zoas and palys to open up a lot more than they were!

Fusch13
09/26/2006, 07:25 AM

09/26/2006, 07:59 AM
maybe if your not dewayne might be!

Fusch13
09/26/2006, 07:59 AM

30mini
09/26/2006, 08:04 AM

30mini

Kurt03
09/26/2006, 08:27 AM
Are you putting the 9.5 on your 20gal as the closed loop? That would be ALOT of flow in there lol, going barebottom? I should be able to come get the rock sometime this week ryan, classes started so ive been pretty busy. Is it submerged in water or just sitting out?
Chris i will have a monti digi for you soon. Let me know when you want to try it.

Fusch13
09/26/2006, 08:28 AM
its in buckets...didnt have water to put it in...so youll have to cycle it for a week or so!

30mini
09/26/2006, 08:35 AM
Yea, a 9.5 for a CL on my 20! If I set it up right, I shouldnt' have any Sandstorms at all!! I may just make a manifold and put it up on top around the rim! This could be better, and create 0 dead spots!

Fusch13
09/26/2006, 08:41 AM

Kurt, that was my original idea, just modified a little! Now, I am going to use that idea, but take out the SCWD, put a T on it, and run the manifold around the tank with larger outputs in the front and smaller ones near the back. Should create some good flow!

Yeah, i definently have room, and i think i nipped the reactor in the but, found a screw loose, i went through whole thing, i think when JAF came and put on new tank, i think they might of sabotased it, maybe to have to come back out for a maintance, more money dont know, but dang if i am not kicking myself for doig this earlier..lol But, not it dont slow down at all...keeps steady bubble count, 2 days strong, keeping fingers crossed!

Kurt03

start it slow, dont let it raise the alk to fast since its working correctly now. It can also lower the ph if the co2 isnt blown off the efflulent i think. What is your alk at now?

Yea, I think your going to be fine! Now that it's going well, and you have that steady stream of calc, you should notice some better growth in your corals!

09/26/2006, 09:27 AM
Yea! I can't wait for this to be done, and over with! I want to get my tank to be a reef, not just a mantis tank! I love the mantids, and I think they are awesome, but you can't keep one that is as big as walter in such a small reef!

I'll talk to my store tonight and see what they say about it! See if they will let me keep him there in the bottom right tank until I can get him sold!

Hey Ryan,
Glad to hear that you found the problem. :) Your calcium demand must not be that high. I haven't seen mine above 400 for more than a year. I test calcium with a Salifert test kit so it should be fairly accurate. Oh well, as long as the corals grow and stay healthy, I'm okay with it.

I told her about the 125's and she said no b/c we don't have a house right now! She said, once we get a house, decide to finish the basement, I can build it into the wall and hide everything in a seperate room with a sink and such!

Hey Chris, doesn't look like I'm gonna be able to make it to Jacks tonight to get that substrate. I'll definitely be there Thursday though. With that crushed coral, do you think it's a bad idea to add the water before the substrate? Or is it like with sand, where you'll have a cloudy tank no matter what?

30mini
09/26/2006, 01:01 PM
Yea, your gonna have a cloudy tank no matter what you do! Were you able to get your plumbing done okay? Did you do a water test on it?

Finishing the plumbing tonight and adding water tomorrow. Have to wait 24 hours for the glue to dry right?

Haven't done a water test yet. How should I do a test run on the plumbing without filling up the tank? Just run the water through it and make sure there aren't any leaks at joints before attaching it to the tank? Sorry, first time. :)

30mini
09/26/2006, 01:08 PM
Oh no, get everything fitted on the tank, and do a wet run with everything! If your just doing a test tonight, go ahead and add some freshwater to it and do your run! Make sure you don't have any leaky bulkheads and the such, and make adjustments as needed, then your done if you have no leaks!

doowain9999
09/26/2006, 01:10 PM
Clearly I should do the test wet run outside? :)

30mini
09/26/2006, 01:15 PM
yea, probably a good idea! Make sure you have your bulkheads tight... hand tight, then maybe 1/2 a turn with a wrench... then give it a shot! Have that wrench handy, and tighten the bulkheads slowly till they stop leaking if you have to! If you tighten them too much, they will split at the ends!

doowain9999
09/26/2006, 01:17 PM
Gotcha. I'm also gonna have to saw off that 1/4" bit of plastic at the end of the threads on the bulkhead so that I can get the female PVC fitting on there. Did you have that on yours?

30mini
09/26/2006, 01:18 PM
no, just slipped it over and threaded it on! where did you get the bulkhead from?

Yea, his may have a small lip on there. Just be carfull when sawing so you don't go too far! Good luck tonight! Let us know how it goes, and take some frickin pictures!! :)

This is interesting, i didnt know this about calcium reactors. This was posted my Randy in the chemistry forum to someone else.

You should tune the reactor to maintain alkalinity. It changes up and down much faster with over and under dosing. Calcium will follow along appropriately unless water changes or inappropriate media cause it to skew one way or another. If you start with a mix like Instant Ocean, you'll be around the numbers that you have now,and if you want higher calcium, you'll need something besides the reactor to boost it. If you tried to use the reactor to raise the calcium, the alkalinity will get too high.

So im guessing you just use it to keep things stable once you get them were you want them?

Hey guys, is it 100% necessary to use PVC primer before gluing?

Kurt03
09/26/2006, 08:26 PM
you run out? i think it preps it for the glue so i wouldnt chance it. I have some if you want to borrow it.

I can buy some at HD. I forgot it. Didn't know if I could get away with not using it.

Thanks though!

That above from randy might help you sone, maybe try adding the calcium part of a 2part to get it up then use the reactor to keep it there? What is your alk staying at?

I'ved dosed ESV two-part before and got tired of it. I now run a kalk reactor and a calcium reactor. I'll wait to see how things go after I have the 210 running for a couple of months.

I have everything glued as far as the standpipes go. I just now have to attach them to the bulkheads. I'm gonna let all this dry til tomorrow night and then I'll run the wet test and take some pictures! Doesn't look too shabby. To cover up the views of the plumbing from the sides, I may build an oak bookshelf on either side. Or some form of cabinet. I thought about building a canopy that maybe ran down the back, but with it being bowfront, I don't want the hassle of curving the front :)

30mini
09/26/2006, 10:34 PM
Build the bookshelf, and the buld canopy into the bookshelf! Do a section that hangs over the tank and connects the two cases together!!!
