I just started setting up a new 115 gal reef tank and was debating what Protein Skimmer to get. I was looking at an Aqua-c EV-180. Any other suggestions out there?

Thanks

i think ASM's give you the best bang for you buck. You can find the ASM g3 with RC mod and ball mod for under 220 used.

Of course you know I'm going to recommend Deltec. ;)

But a good alternative is one of the Reef Octopus recirc skimmers. ATR has the whole line.

I live in Gilbert and am running the Tunze 9010. I am extremely happy with the skimmer, if you wanna swing by and check it out LMK. I live hear Higley & Elliott. I will let you sniff the skimmate. ;-)

hrmmm not to hijack into a thread but I didn't want to make a new one just to ask what would be some choices for a hob skimmer or one that doesn't have to sit in a sump and can sit under the tank?

i have a remora and dont like it at all. then a prizm that works real well. But you can get a coral life super skimmer and they work and are a good price.

One of the most impressive skimmers for the money I've EVER owned - Tunze 9010. It runs $325 and draws 650LPH. I am literally emptying the cup every two days of nasty gunk - and my tank is very clean. These were from day 2, I have since then tweaked it and get a drier skimmate.

Very small, fits in sump easy

Fliger- I would love to see your system, I notice you have no middle post on your stand also. I am in the process of building a stand and wanted to eliminate any barriers for the sump.

majestic sea life- I am running a remora also. I like it but I believe it's too small for a 115 gal. And I really wanted something that sat in the sump.

Thanks everyone for your input.

If you're thinking about an ASM skimmer, check out Reef Octopus (http://www.aquacave.com/searchresult.aspx?CategoryID=222) as well. The NW150 model is very close in size and pump specs to the G3, but costs $130 vs $243. Huge thread with many positive experiences here (http://archive.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=866254).

Btw, I had a remora with mj1200 pump, and it worked great for my 29g. Of course an in-sump skimmer 3 times it's size will outclass it, but with smaller tanks you just don't need that power.

I used the AquaC EV180. It was OK, but does not produce the skimmate of the Euroreef skimmers. ASM and Euroreef have same technology, but Euroreef uses more expensive acrylic and is more durable. I would not buy an AquaC again. The foam injector does not perform as well as the needlewheel design. However, the aquaC is quieter than the Euroreef.

Just to clarify:

ASM skimmers do not use the same parts as Euro-Reef skimmers. "Technology" is a bit to loose a statement as many mfrs utilize pinwheels in skimmer designs. Our new impeller, venturi, and pump combinations far outperform ASM products. The new RS Series skimmer are equal to or less expensive than the comparable ASM skimmer sold through legitimate dealers.

Hope that helps :)
