I am in the market for a gasoline generator.. Nothing too large.. Just big enough to drive my tank/chiller in the event of a catastrophic power loss.. Given all this summer's storms, I figure I'm just asking for trouble.. If I don't have one..

That said, I guess my budget is somewhere between 500 and $1000

If anyone knows of one, or where I could pick one up at a decent price..

Thanks in advance!

The classifieds are a good place to start most 5000 watt ones go for cheap under 500. But if you are looking for quiet and quality go yamaha or honda both are quiet compared to a colman which is 500 new and the yahma and honda are 1000+ . I have used many generators in my tade and own 2 1 for work and one for the tanks.

Hey Chris,

Do you know of a place where I can get a tune up for my generator?

not off the top of my head but almost any small engine repair shop can . But its not hard to change the oil , spark plug and air filter.

The best value on generators right now is the Champion brand at Checker Auto, $299. There is a very large thread (245 pages, 1440 posts and 197,000 views!)on www.RV.net titled 3000w Chinese Gensets info. The Champion is by far the winner. There are two models, I bought the 4450w peak-3500w running version in November and now they have an RV ready version for the same price that has all 30 amps available at one plug.
Mine will run my fifth wheels 13.5kw A/C unit, microwave and all the lights at the same time no problem. 67 dBa sound which is actually pretty quiet and much quieter than the Coleman or Generac that use Briggs & Stratton engines. The Chinese have licensed the old Honda GX200 engine and put a monster muffler on it. www.championpowerequipment.com
I actually got mine for $238, Pep Boys had their Power Pro on sale which is not as good a genset (lousy regulator) but Checker matched it plus gave me another 5% off plus a coupon fron their calendar.

Per AZDesertRat, I've seen them cheapest at Checker. I think there is a smaller Champion model than the one he mentioned if you need it solely for your tank, I saw it on 50% sale for $125, so I guess $250. would be the normal price.

There was an ad in the paper about two weeks ago for a place similar to Big Lots, I don't remember the name but it had factory remanufacturered and guaranteed Champion 3500w generators for $199. It was something like Shop N Save or ?

There is a generator listed on Ebay that is located at Tempe Loan Co. I presume this is a pawn shop in Tempe. Anyway, here is a link. I don't know if it is a good value, but it may be helpful.http://cgi.ebay.com/GENERAC-4000XL-GASOLINE-OPERATED-GENERATOR-W-7-8HP_W0QQitemZ250012932906QQihZ015QQcategoryZ106437QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

If it goes over 225 the value isn't there IMO . Those are 500 or less new.
