Well today I pulled the trigger and am now the proud owner of a brand new 310 gallon reef ready tank... Its 8 ft long by 30 inches wide and 25 inches tall with starphire glass on both long sides and one short side for extra clarity. 2 1 1/2 inch drains and 2 1 inch returns all plumbed into a single overflow in the one 30 inch side so the tank will be viewable from both sides. I couldn't be happier.... I pick her up second week of july.

Stacker we will def be building a sump this summer now... no doubt about it. I decided the stand will be between 36 and 40 inches tall because I want the tank about eye level. So we got us lots of room to work with. All I can say right now is :D :D :D :D o and that I'm completely broke

Ok the stand is coming together great. The frame is built and it will be covered with plywood tomorrow. From here it will have cherry planks which will be tongue and grooved placed over this. I will get some pics of the stand when it is done, this sucker is structually sound. 2 boxes of screws, 17 2x4's and 16 sinker bolts are holding this thing together. Like i said I'm making a log of this setup so I will be sharing pics of everything (well whatever my 56k lets me lol)

Stack the stand is 38 inches tall... but with the way its built I probably have about 32 inches or so from from to ceiling. More than enough to acomidate anything I feel we need. It will have a sliding floor so I can easily access any electrical equipment or the sump for cleaning.

I saw a layout on a 240 that had 2 vertical sliders behind doors on either side of the stand. Each of 4 panels held timers, swithches, GFCI's, controllers, and monitors. It was all very neat and clean but more importantly 100% functional. Unless you plan to make your plumbing flexible I'd forgoe the sliding bottom... Sound like a trainwreck looking for a place to happen. But, whudduIknow?

we have 23 inches of width for it to fit the sump in the door. and the length could be as long as I chose. Do you guys think a G4 skimmer rated for 350 gallons could handle this? I know thats cutting it close but man its a price increase to the next skimmer.

Ok now i have some questions... don't all rush in and answer at once (thanks for everything dale).

1) Should i put some type of starboard between the tank and stand, it is completely level right now in all places.

2) Sandbed or Barebottom and why

3) What would be the quietest pump for a return. this thing is a few feet from my bed and I want to sleep at night.

4) o and what are the odds of me getting by without a chiller till next summer.. central air set on 77 and off in the winters when its in the low to mid 70's here.

Answers
1) sounds unnecesary
2)I like the look of sandbed but if your going for all SPS, barebottom provides more control over nutrient levels. You could always do a false sandbed with cement or something like that.
3)I like my Dolphin AmpMaster
4)Might be able to get away with it with a fan or two in your sump or above the display.

cool thanks for the answers.. I was thinking false sandbed with maybe a deep sandbed in the fuge area so if something bad happens I can remove it. but i also never vacum my tank so i don't know how well that would work out

Also where can I get a cheap RO/DI filter? I was thinking Reefflo barracuda pump for my return 3500 gpa for 250 dollars. my overflow can handle 3000 gpa turnover from what I was told by the manufacturer so I want something quiet cheap and close to that number. but quiet is number one because this is something i cannot shut off before bedtime. more opinions please...

Starboard is for chicks! are you wussing out on us now?

Bottom is up to your taste, how much LR you'll have, and if you plan on having an anerobic arein in your fuge as you mentioned. Myself, I like a med. SB that looks natural (not sterile white).

Quitest pump would be a big submersible. Next would be a magnetic drive external , followed by a direct drive external (spa pump). Direct drives are strong but noisy as hell. The pump can be housed in a sound insulating box with a small fan to help quiet it.

RO/DI ... I suggest the 100 GPD unit by Water General sold on Ebay for about $100. the replacement membranes are $40 and all canisters are easy access. DI resins are replacable too. Nothing fancy but I have one and Paul has the same model. Thye have worked well!

Mike I may be looking for an Ro/di unit, what do you have and how much are you asking?

coralfarmer84

Mike how much for the 2200 gpa. I need something more like 3000 gallons per hour at 6 ft. which would be more like a 4000 gpa pump.

What do you guys think about a Sequence Dart pump. they are the quietest on the market according to marinedepot and pump about what I need an hour. Take a look and let me know, i want to do this thing right.

Well sequence dart or no? o and what do you guys think about an ASM-G4... rated for 350 gallons, but mine will be about 370ish. Yay or Nay? I found one for 250 bucks one week old when they are 450 new, thats why I ask.....

Don't know squat about sequence pumps so I won't comment. G4, you can't go wrong for 2-fiddy! No brainer!
