It does belong to the genus Eunice. I can't tell species without examining the worm.

Will my Niger Trigger eat a Bristle Worm about 6 inches long?

Sorry about getting off topic.

BTW, cluvir are you going to keep that?

10" ???? just a baby....these things get huge....and fast. I estimated that mine grew at a rate of 3" a month to reach its final removal size of 7 feet....in fact, i recently pulled another one out at 5 feet. The second one probably came in on a secondary Fiji rock load a couple of years after the first load. These things are voracious predators against soft corals. I suggest getting it out ASAP.

GROSSEST THREAD OF THE MONTH (GTOTM)!

Ultra-heebie-jeebies....I haaaaaaaaate huge worms in reef tanks....7 feet?!?! My god, did you have to bury it in your backyard or grind it up into dog food?

Imagine the pranks you could pull with a 7 foot predatory worm - throw it into a swimming pool!

PITSTOP
06/10/2006, 11:02 AM
I bet they squirm and thrash about when you try to remove them - at that size they probably have really good muscle tone - yiiiiiiikes - more heebie-jeebies!!!!

These things are very good at hiding and will even create tubes within your sand to live if they can't find a suitable rock...as they do in the wild. They only come out at night and are completely hidden during the day....so, unless you're a regular night time viewer, you'll never know it's there. I only became suspicious when a large patch of my ricordia were mowed down overnite. Here's the 5 foot one that I pulled out a few months ago.... it probably came in as a small hitchiker on some rock added later....then grew and grew....until his gluttony could no longer be overlooked. The only way to remove these guys is to determine their rock lair....which they return to every night....and then remove the rock in its entirety. They are way too quick and strong to try to catch otherwise. When I determined which rock that he was using as a lair, I broke down that section and removed the rock....even then....I didn't know if I had him or not.....I had to break apart the rock to reveal his hidden chamber of secrets.

i'm "unsubscribing" to this thread. this is the equivalent of watching "JAWS" back in the 70's. after that movie, i could never go in the water again without being paranoid. the thought that something like that could be lingering in my tank.....

How big do Bristle Worms get? Hopefully they don't get that size bc I let a 6 inch bristle worm go in my tank but my Niger Trigger never saw it or else it would have been eaten.

I'm with you!! If I ever saw/see that in my tank, I'd have to sell the entire system. There's no way I'd be reaching in there after it...:eek1:

steveweast - I recently found a smaller version of your worm(s) in my tank, and this is after a long time of searching for the predator that ate every orange zoanthid polyp of the very first coral colony I ever bought. By chance I saw the iridescent black body sliding by a rock crevice a couple hours after the lights went out. I have no idea which rock it calls home, or how to figure this out. I remember seeing a tiny cool black worm in the base rock of an acro frag, and I wish i knew then what I know now. I could've nipped the problem in the bud before it grew its appetite! Any suggestions?

steveweast
06/11/2006, 10:42 PM
There's no quick way to tell which rock is home.......you just have to keep viewing over several nights and a pattern of his movements will be noticed. I observed mine over about 8 nights to determine with some confidence the correct rock. As the worm get larger, the tail always stays in the lair while the head goes foraging......the head always then recoils back to home base.

NOTICE THE LONG TONGS THE GUY IS USING... MUST GIVE HIM THE HEBIE JEBIES...

Steve973
06/12/2006, 07:26 AM
Are there any telltale signs at the entrance of their hole? And is it more likely that it'll open to the inside of the rockwork? I haven't been able to see this guy before or since my recent sighting, and it didn't even seem to bother with the trap I made. I'm just looking for pointers to make my searching a bit easier.

By the way, I don't mean to hijack this thread, so don't hesitate to pull it back on track.

steveweast
06/12/2006, 10:06 AM
Sorry....no telltale sign. They do have "rabbit pellet" looking droppings though.......but, that won't tell you where home is. Unfortuneatly, you have to just keep looking and remove him with his rock home. I've never had, nor I have heard of anyone having, any success with a trap.

As for the eeewww factor....remember, these things are considered good eats in Fiji.....or at least their tails are....which break off and swim to the surface to release their eggs/sperm. The lesson....read those menus carefully when travelling in Fiji.

a nice head shot.....

yes they bite, you stay like with a small irritation.
I ve always heard to remove them, because when they grow they will get into the PVC and you can have your room plenty of water !

hay i dont have worms in my tank so I dont know if this will work or it may have already been thought of but you might be able to observe them with a red light(most animals cant see it dunno about invertibrates though). It would be a cool thing to have in a species tank though

I've pulled out 5 of them from my Fiji live rock. I also had one before in rock i bought from TBS so it's not just Fiji rock that carries them.

steveweast Wow i thought I was the only one who ever had there ricordia chowed on by these things. He would come out at night and eat the inside of my ricordia leaving a hollowed out center so the polyps looked like a spare tire. After losing half my rics i decided to break down the tank & to my surprise while hosing out the old sand out crawled & little one only 12in but boy what a pain in the butt. My ricordia are now making a come back.

We saw one of these in an LFS tank yesterday, and it creeped my wife out to the point of her wanting to rethink putting together a reef tank...I'm still gonna put one together, but she says she will never put her arm in the tank :)

I thought it looked cool, but I sure as heck wouldn't want one in my tank...

07/29/2007, 02:48 PM
They are creepy looking but kinda fun to watch. I use to throw food in for mine to see him come out. Mine looked exactly like the OP's pics. I'd say he was only about 12" maybe a bit longer, I had to remove him when I decided to make it a reef tank, ended up ripping him into three pieces trying to get him out, felt kinda bad but I didn't have anywhere to keep it besides. Mine burrowed several holes in one rock and would block up the holes with bits of crushed coral and sand, your best bet is find the rock and remove it.

The longest one I've ever found was a 27" Bristle Worm in my 4' long 60 gal tank....I caught it as it was grabbing a snail off the glass in my tank and couldn't believe it as I kept pulling and more of this thing was coming out...can;t imagine pulling out a 7 footer...I'b be stirring all my sand with a sharp knife, lol

Hey Oregon dude, did you wreck that thing when you pulled it out of the tank? If so, how?

If I ever saw one of those things in my tank I would drain it and toss the tank to the curb.
