In the process of putting a 120 together, I am definitly not doing an SPS Tank but I still dont know if I want to do a softie dominated tank becuase it kind of lacks color and is pretty bland.

Lets see some pics of your softie dominated tanks and change my mind!

I have tons of mushrooms and zoa's in my tank, but no leathers. I do have sps also, but I thought you might want to see the mushrooms.

Niiice tank, I was leaning towards a zoo/shroom tank aswell but I think Zoo's altough my favorite coral might not do so well in my setup and instead I want some colorful softies to take it place.

I can't believe you would think softies creat a bland coloring. look at all the colorations of zoo's and shrooms alone. not to metion leathers and trees. i used to think wow ive got 4 diffrent types of shrooms in my tank no more, then i see a ricordia i have to have boom theres another , o think now im up to like 10 diffrent colors of shrooms, no bland in this tank, no cam to take pics but softies are anything but bland and un colorful

So true! I have about 25-30 zoa color morphs (mostly frags as you can tell from my pic) and 10-15 different mushroom color morphs! There are hundreds of zoa color morphs, the same with mushrooms and rics. More beautiful then SPS imo, but don't let any of those guys in the SPS forum read that .

I dont consider zoos or mushrooms softys, when you go to a coral website to purchase something they have a different section for rics/shrooms and zoos. At first I wanted to stock my tank with just zoo's/rics and shrooms but know I want some more stuff that is kinda "wavy" i guess so I want to add some softys that arent baige or white.

bradleyj,

Did I read your description right? 65 gallon is your tank size? If so how do you keep all of those fish in that tank? I have 5 now in my 75 gallon and I was thinking that with a CBB and YT that was a bit much.

Nice looking tank by the way and I am not the frickin T policia!

Thanks,

it something like 1 inch of fish for every gallon of water, throw in a sump and a fuge increase your water volume. ive seen people run water through a 50 gal rubbermaid trashcan just to add more fish

Thanks everyone for your nice comments. I do have alot of fish for a 65g. I've had all of them in my tank for over two years now and they have all tripled in size. I do weekly waterchanges and have a nice skimmer and run ozone , all which help tremendously in keeping these fish healthy. I am in the process right now of setting up my new 225 gal and my tangs and rabbitfish can't wait.

May not be a good rule of thumb but all those sumps and refuguims, do add water volume to your tank, it has been in wide practice for a long time, not that i agree with all those fish in such a small tank

I never thought of adding any kind of macro or see grass to my tank until I saw this picture ... thanks for inpsiring me! I always thought it would look ugly but you proved me wrong.

Caulerpa ... looks GREAT but how fast does it spread? I also know this macro is notorious for heavy nutrient export but also for its problems. Have you had it go sexual? Your tank is ovbiously not lit 24/7, but then agian it isnt jam packied in a fuge.

I would love to here more about this

Reef, this kind does not go sexual, I have had it for over 8 years in my tanks with no problem.
It grows very fast, on sand or rock, thus I keep it pulled every month or so.
I like the nature look that it gives a tank and have it in all of my tanks.
Makes for a very natural look.
By the way, I don't have fuges or sumps on any of my tanks.
One reason I feel that I dont need it is have the combination of this caulerpa and other filter feeders in my tanks keep them crystal clear.

Here is a full tank view , the picture above this is in the left hand corner of the tank.
I let it grow all over the tank, keeping it pulled if it starts to invade the corals which they do fast.

Uhm...

ALL caulerpas can go sexual.. Including this one (feather caulerpa). I've had it go sexual in a 10g fuge on a 29g tank. Made for a milky white tank for 36 hours..

Your regular pruning helps keep it from reaching critical mass, aka, when it goes sexual..

finding nemo
05/02/2006, 08:37 PM
Nagel, I have never had it go sexual in all the years I have had it. So if it does it hasnt for me.
Maybe because I keep it pulled out before it takes over everything that keeps it from doing that.
Don't know but I love the stuff

reefnewbie54321
05/02/2006, 08:42 PM
It can go sexual and probably isnt the best canidate for a fuge macro BUT this is a display were dealing with, from waht ive read it goes sexual when lare amounts build up and it gets crowded. You would have to be pretty careless to let this happen in a display tank. If it does go sexual on you I guess you kind of deserve it lol.

I realy like the look of this. It gives the greyish/baige/white softys a little pizazz

Nagel
05/02/2006, 08:55 PM
Thats exactly what I said, though I guess "critical mass" is a bit cryptic..

When it has nowhere left to grow, and you are almost busting at the seams with it (and many fuges do look like this), that's when it goes sexual..

The regular pruning helps to keep it from getting to this point, hence you never had to deal with it going sexual..

I would keep some in my main tank, but the tangs, they love it. I basically recycle caulerpa from my 75g refugium as tang food..

What kind of tangs and what kind of caulerpa?
My hippo and yellow wouldnt eat my caulerpa but they were probably spoiled becuase before that I bought a tang heaven macro pack and was feeding them that. I woudnt mind getting rid of the tang heaven macro in my fuge and replasing it with cheato and let them feed of the caulerpa in the display (wich I think I;m going to add soon).

I have this in both big tanks and have a yellow tang in both, I have never seen them eat it nor have I seen it mowed down, so just don't think they eat this kind.
But then again, I have so much of it maybe they do eat a bit of it and I don't notice;)
Either way, I love the stuff and like the looks of it.
Give it a try and see how it looks in yours.
But keep it from getting away from you as I do. Pull and relocate is the key:)

I kind of ignored this for awhile becuase I personaly do not like the whole tang police mumbo jumbo ... although I do feel that tangs need to be housed in a 100g and up tank when I had a 55 I purchased a yellow tang and a hippo tang a 18 months later I bought a 120. Tangs are one of the most popular fish ... people are going to keep buying them wether or not they have room. BUT I suggest you sell/give them away when they get to cramped or get a bigger tank, its not right to keep them in such a small tank. I dfont know if yours are fully grown but when they are I suggest you upgrade or replace them.

Sumps/Fuges just make your tank more stable and lessen the biolopad by spreading it over a bigger volume. Tangs still need so much space to move ... I see people with 120gallon tanks that are so cramed with sps that there tangs still dont have enouugh room.

I'm not saying its wrong to buy tangs for a 65 tank but there going to outgrow it fast ... and 4 tangs is a little bit overboard I was pretty nervous about a hippo and a yellow in a 55 and I made sure that I bought them at about 1 1/2"-2" each

Hehe. I have many.. In almost as many tanks.. For starters:

Feather Caulerpa - Hippo, Desjardinii, Purple, Powder Blue, Hawaiian Sailfin, Vlamingi, Sohal and even the Chevron from time to time

Grape Caulerpa - Hippo, Desjardinii, Purple, Powder Blue, Hawaiian Sailfin, Vlamingi, Sohal, Chevron, even my French Angel and Emperor Angels love this stuff

Razor Caulerpa - Hippo, Desjardinii, Purple, Vlamingi, Sohal

Cup Caulerpa - Purple, Vlamingi, Sohal

This is what I have / and have watched them eat. The Vlamingi's are caulerpa-eating machines. The Hippo will eat lots of it, but never seems to fatten up, in comparison to the Sohal which is a fat pig. The Chevron only picks at it, I wouldn't say he loves it as much as the others do.

My comment is more for the tangs rather then the # of fish. Trust me, I know the benefits of volume (my system is over 1000 gallons and includes 11 tanks). The purple tang is about all I would keep in Bradleyj's tank. I have a 14" hippo here, and in the past I had a 16" Blonde Naso (traded it in because it developed a taste for soft corals.) The Sailfin could easily get to 10" - 12" in diameter, so again, not the best choice for a 65.

Volume for a number of fish is one thing, say a large school of chromis or anthias, but system volume is no substitute for a large tank with swimming room for large tangs.

In other words, my Vlamingi's (I have 2) will one day outgrow even my 300. I have plans to donate them to some local public aquariums when they reach 16" (still plenty of room for them to swim in a 96Lx24Wx30T tank, but my conscience gets the better of me). And yes, I have already worked out the details with the aquariums (MOST will NOT accept fish like this, do NOT buy with the intention of giving them to a local public aquarium unless you have talked with the curator and worked out the specifics beforehand!)

Lets see some more! I know there out there

HI Reef, I have never heard of that.
I have some growing all over the sand and rock and I pull it often and hav'nt had a problem at all with the tank after doing so.
I have been doing it for many years with no losses of fish or stock so just don't know if that is true or not.
But then again, now much caulerpa is he saying to pull out at one time to create that problem?
I do about 2 sandwich bags at a time is all I have done.
Do you have the article or thread where he talked about that?

reefnewbie54321
05/04/2006, 04:05 PM
I will try to find it ... I think it was on wetwebmedia and it was about why caulerpa wasnt a good refugium macro. It talked about it going sexual ect. and also that when pruning it released toxins.

Thanks, how many gallons do they need?

Paul B
06/01/2006, 04:07 PM
Raphael. they are not really a newbe fish. They should be fed live black worms, small pieces of fresh clam, mysis, plankton etc. They get about 5" long but they stay stunted in a tank and may grow to 4" depending on how large the tank is. You can keep them in a 50 gallon tank but of course bigger is better. If the tank was just set up I would wait a year or so.
They were always my favorite fish and I have been keeping them for over 30 years. Make sure it is eating in the store, a lot of them are caught with cyanide and do not survive long.

Flatlander
06/01/2006, 06:01 PM
As Paul & I once talked about, my 2yr. old copperband had a liking for my crocea clams. But he,s such a lovable friend, I sold all four of my clams and kept him.

He has not bothered anything else yet and my new 75g,is designed with him in mind, corals and all. :) He does get a supermarket "live clam" {frozen}, daily and cleans 'em out shiney.

Paul B
06/01/2006, 06:38 PM
I have had a bunch of them and so far none of them nipped anything that I could tell. I have a clam which this one ignores. I also only have LPS and one sps so I can't comment on those.
Reefnewbe, I took a picture of your twin avitar and this long nose butterfly in Bora Bora. Longnoses are just about the same as copperbands in temperment and diet.

Thanks, one last question (I promise :) ) How many gallons does a yellow tang need, I'm asking because I have heard alot of different answers.

reefnewbie54321
06/05/2006, 07:10 PM
You will get a million different opinions on the never ended tang debate ...

I have a 120 and was told I should have a Yellow Tang since my tank is only 4 feet long but yet you will see people with 55 gallons having multiple tangs.

To house a show size yellow tang (4-5 years old) you will need a 6 foot tank but if you buy them small like mostly everyone does (I dont know anyone who purchases show sized tangs) then you wont have to worry about it outgrowing the tank for another 4-5 years. BUT as said before it is rare for someone to buy the showsize tang from you so your kinda stuck with it. In the end its all up to you ... If you think in 4 years you will have a bigger tank or you will have someone to give it to then by all means get one. If I wanted a Yellow tang in my tank I would get one even thoughmy tank cant house it for an entire lifespan, it depends what your future plans are for the fish or how bad you want it.

Nice tank but I have a few questions ...

I see you have a tube anemone. Does it come out during the day? I heard they only come out at night and hide in there tube during the day.

In the 2nd picture inbetween the bubble coral and yellow gonipora or the 3rd picture directly above the yellow tang ... are those polps zoo's or palys? They look pretty big so I wasnt sure.

Holy smokes that is one big leather, how tall is that?
Beautiful tank

Thanks.

I think it's around 18 in tall. I've had it for over 6 years now and it's never been fragged. It was only 4 in across when I purchased it.

Can anyone tell me what the gorgonia is in the 3rd pic?? I believe it's some type of knobby sea rod in the eunicea family. Does it have a foul smell when it's out of the tank? That's one of the characteristics of this coral.

This tank is absolutely gorgeous!!! Please let me know how you keep the algae under control. I have some of the same zoos, & shrooms, but when they get enough light, I have too much of the green stuff. I have plenty of snails, hermits, and an Urchin, and I have begun to limit any feeding. My goal is to have a tank that looks 1/2 as good as yours!! Thanks so much, Janet in Ky.

Janet,

Algae in a softie tank can be troubling sometimes, esp. since the inhabitants like a little more nutrient in the water, for the most part. What size tank and skimmer are you running? The 20L I posted has no micro algae, but a ton of razor caulerpa (can't get rid of the stuff once it enters the system). There is only a Magnum 250 HOB and a MJ 600 for flow/filtration. My 5gal at work gets covered in micro and razor over the course of four days or so and have roughly the same filtration set up... Natural predation is usually the best method (fish or clean up like you mentioned).

The carnation or dendronepthya(spelling?) can be kept....very tough specimen to keep though. Even advanced hobbyists cant keep it in most cases. There is a guy in my hometown that has a tank dedicated to carnations.

I think this is why he has success. He is very wealthy and has tons of tanks. I have heard they really like some nitrate rich tanks(within reason)...basically the guy chocks the tank full of phyto, and lots of other smaller micron food sources. I have even heard of people that put a little peice of bread in the water and let it rot for part of a day??? It sounds crazy but then you see their carnation tank and you are like DANGGGG!

This is a very uninformed though here but it is the only things that i have heard about anyone who has kept them super succesfully and they had a species tank for them.

What a beautiful tank. I too was leaning towards a mushroom tank. In the past I had many different type of mushrooms... but for some unknown reason, they have packed their fungus and hopped out of the tank. One day they were large and healthy... the next day... teeny tiny and/or gone.

Is it because of having a puffer fish?????

Again... your tank is beautiful.

Here's a few pics of my 'mixed' reef. I'm moving back to a predominately softy/anemone tank from 2 years of 'colored sticks'. I'll be keeping some stonies, but looking at going to mostly tree corals and nems. Tank is a 240 gallon cubish style with no top bracing, 4x4x2. Lighting is 2 48" Oceanlight pendants with dual 250 watt DE halides and dual T5 actinics.

Ok, after seeing these pictures I think I have made my decision. I'm building a 150g right now that is cycleing and everyone keeps asking me "What are you going to put in it?" SPS, LPS, Softies?.... I think I'm going to put in Softies =)

Softa corals are like trash fish, you guys keep carp in your koi ponds ? :)

Seriously these tanks look better than almost any SPS tank. Who ever said you must have SPS for color is nuts. I see more color in these tanks than the typical brown-out SPS suffer.

Lost most of the corals and fish when the front seam leaked last year. This is what it looks like now. I need to get a new camera.

jay2525, Here are a few shots of the 220 softie tank you asked about. Note the dates and how some of the softies have been fragged and have regenerated within a few months. Feel free to check out her website.

That is a beautiful soft coral tank. It is nice to see something other than the SPS dominated tanks. Personally I think they're highly overrated. I like a good balance between hard and soft corals.

Thanks for sharing.:)

Blide, I love that last tank. Even though it is not colorful, it just looks so organic. I can only imagine how cool that tank looks with everthing in motion.

I've just got two little nanos....a 29 and a 15. Not much coral at the moment, though I may be picking some up from a friend tomorrow.....hammer coral and some hairy shrooms....can't wait !
I'm hoping to get these two to measure up to some of the beauts that have been posted thus far ! :D

My 29...

Here is my soft coral tank, It is a 40 gallon bare bottom. I add nothing to the tank except for RO/DI makeup water added daily on a dosing pump and monthy 7 gallon water changes. Sorry, its not the best camera.
