Hey Sam, I may be changing MH ballasts, reflectors and bulbs in the next couple months. Just waiting for reflector analysis data to come out on the new Lumen Max 3 reflectors before I commit.

Hey Travis, if you do upgrade and part with your 250w's let me know, i'm in the market for more with my new 8' tank! Thanks. Oh, and to not get too far off thread topic here kau_cinta_ku, I only have a 48" 260W PC setup, I'm guessing that would be too long unless you can accomodate it somehow?....

well i think 2 MH 250 watts will be to much for my softies LPS tank the reason needing 2 is because of the center brace leaves a big shadow and the 48" due to the tank being a room divider it will stick out longer than i would like. but thanks for the offers so far

i thaught you was gunna go the t5 route? is your just keeping lps and softies do what i do vho wooot. the cheap mans reef tank lighting. it might not be the best as the others but it deff works for what i keep. and you can cram some 36's in a canopy

i am going to use T5 lighting on the 75 gal. but most that i have read about T5's is that running enough will melt softies so i am gonna keep the 46 gal. for softies and LPS and the 75 will be mostly SPS. as for a canopy i know ppl have made them but kinda hard for a bowfront

creslin2

nah, not so hard. just need to learn how to bend wood. Need a form (to go under the wood to support and bend it to the shape you want), some water, and weights. Oh, and time, maybe a bit of patience. ;)

I've been told steaming works really well, but that's kinda more equipment than most people have or are willing to get into.

i know its ghetto but they do have a bendable plywood that people use to make speaker boxes.

ok, you know how the cheap hoods look? this one is 29" long, is 2.5" high in the back, and 2.5" wide at the top, angles down the front for 2.25", and has a 1" lip. the current reflector/light/ballast set up is 24" looking for about 75 W bulb. or 75 W total, I guess. the tank is a 29 gallon, and it's 18 inches deep.

Man I have checked everywhere I am able...maybe others can help...I can only find a 430 Ice cap fixture...with 2 lamps not one...and end caps...still needs to be wired to a supply cord...but with lamps, caps, and such...$225.00...way to high for a single buld application...but let me know...

Thanks for the consideration...

hellolights.com has a 24" VHO retro fit for 2 bulbs with an ARO ballast (no idea how those are) for $149.99 without a bulb, and then you can add a bulb for around $20 each and of course shipping....... again, no idea how the ARO models are.....

Come to think of it (a little too late) unless you know someone who has had awesome results with the ARO ballast, IMO it would be worth the extra few $$$ to get the Icecap from Grant, it's really not much more $$$ and it's a trusted name from a very trusted person.....

I looked at the setup from hellolights.com. Not really what I'm lookin for, since it's a 10" wide setup. and I have 4" to use.... :(
otherwise I need to completely redesign the hood and build a new one. Not something I am looking forward to. Or get/build a canopy. :( again, not something I am looking forward to. I like the hood I have, just need more light out of it.

maybe it is possible to trim off the other 6" I don't need....have a useless half reflector and 2 extra ballasts....hm.

Let me know...I also deal in hello lights...if needed...I like PFO the best...very well built and known. Just not exactly what you want...so still looking.

so I stumbled around my least favorite hellhole (walmart) last night and wandered through the hardware section to compare prices on the studfinder I bought. In walking through the lighting section, I saw a Lights Of America light fixture....it's 24", rating of 75W (uses 17W). Portable grow light fixture mountable under cabinet. $10.

It's $10, I don't mind trying it to see if it will give the light output needed for the 75W I'm looking for. Only concern I have is if it proves ineffective for aquariums. Don't want to rip old fixture apart and then have to put it back together again.... Suggestions? I want to try it....but.....

I guess I'm a little worried about the so-so rating LOA has gotten from what I hear.

also, what dimensions? maybe I can use it in the new 65g I have, assuming that PC is comparable to other lighting choices. I know they all have their selling points, just not sure what the major one for pc is *is lighting ignorant*

also recently read about Icecap ballasts that were driving normal output bulbs at VHO range. it's on the Icecap site (the review/experiment, that is) save like $80 a year in bulbs alone. the experiment basically concluded that you lose some intensity in certain peaks of the emitted radiation, but the overall band of radiation broadcast from the NO bulbs was very similar to VHO bulbs.

looks like the 430 is the 660 with a lower total load that it can handle. what's the price difference? This might be something I wind up getting for the 65g tank I have. (still lacking a light system for it. no hurry though, still don't have any definite plans for it.)

there is only about 15-20 dollars diff. in the 2 ballasts depending on where you get them
