I am interested in possibly getting into photography as a way of earning an income, how can I copyright protect my photos by disabling right click on my website(s)?

Let's say he says yes. How would I use it. Pretend I know very little about website hosting. I know enough, but if you talk to me like I'm five, I might get it:D

hah! then we better talk like i'm two 'cause i bet i know a lot less than you do :p
i guess you just insert the javascript into the html of your pages. i guess. i haven't tried it yet myself but i was planning on just copying and pasting the script right onto the tailend of the page.
there are probably a lot of people on RC that know exactly what to do and hopefully one of them will speak up.

p.s.- still waiting to hear back

Well, I found it, but it doesn't really stop anyone as you will read. I did find the idea of watermarking an image seen here...

while the watermark is extra help, it can be photoshoped out rather quickly I'd assume. Protecting intelectual property on the net is very difficult. One of the best ways will probably be to keep anything you want maintained as your's off the net. But I'd hate to see that happen, because I'd miss out on allot of great pic that way.

As the link indicates, simply disabling the right click will do nothing to protect your images...
I would recommend a couple of things...First off, add a copywrite statement on the image. No, this will not really keep the images from being stolen, but at the very least, it indicates that the images are not to be used. If you don't do this, a casual browser may not know that the images aren't public domain.
The other thing is that you should not post high resolution copies of the images. I'm not positive what the largest size would be, but probably on the order of 640x480 or 800x600. This way, even if someone does take them, you are limiting their use to the web as those sizes are too small to get a decent sized, professional quality print.
I would also recommend that you do a search on some of the photography boards. I'm sure this topic has been discussed to great lengths.

i received permission to pass on the code. here it is:
******** LANGUAGE="JavaScript">
function right(e) {
if (navigator.appName == 'Netscape' &&
(e.which == 3 || e.which == 2))
return false;
else if (navigator.appName == 'Microsoft Internet Explorer' &&
(event.button == 2 || event.button == 3)) {
alert("Pictures on this website are copyrighted and may not be electronically reproduced without consent.");
return false;
}
return true;
}
document.onmousedown=right;
document.onmouseup=right;
if (document.layers) window.captureEvents(Event.MOUSEDOWN);
if (document.layers) window.captureEvents(Event.MOUSEUP);
window.onmousedown=right;
window.onmouseup=right;
<!--The last three items represent the popup window width, height, and scrollbars. -->
<!-- Begin
function NewWindow(mypage, myname, w, h, scroll) {
var winl = (screen.width - w) / 2;
var wint = (screen.height - h) / 2;
winprops = 'height='+h+',width='+w+',top='+wint+',left='+winl+',scrollbars='+scroll+',resizable'
win = window.open(mypage, myname, winprops)
if (parseInt(navigator.appVersion) >= 4) { win.window.focus(); }
}
// End -->
</SCRIPT>

A water mark over the main part of the image is really the only way, and yes it can be removed with photoshop, but you can make it so difficult that people will pass on it.
Doing a very small low res image is another.
If you have a Mac, you can just drag and drop the image. There really is no way to protect it.
You could make your images show up in Flash. :p I don't believe there is a real way to extract the images from this format, at least directly from the page. You still can't stop screen shots though. My guess is that a Flash driven photo gallery would be the best way to go.
