I need to buy at least $200 lbs of sand, dead or alive. Any suggestions locally or the bar area?

I am going to need to buy a lot of snails and other cleaners pretty soon here, anyone want to do a group buy. I could coordinate it.

What kind of sand are you looking for? Sugar fine, small aragonite, something else? Also how deep of a sandbed are you planning? I don't really have any suggestions as to where, but if you're looking for sugar fine then Southdown is a good and inexpensive option if you can find it. Seems like those bags of sand are pretty expensive at the fish store.

from what I read the southdown is very hard to find, has anyone in the area had any luck finding any?

Try looking at Home Depot. They might have them. Usually Home depot at back east have them. You migh have to special order them.

Why not just buy the live sand that is in the bag with water on them. At least it's seeded already. Since you're only looking for 200 lbs.

Since you're only looking for 200 lbs.

That's why I was curious above, 200# is not much sand.

I am going to start with 1.5 to 4 inches. Just really want to get something in there to get the cycle going better.

try ted at tropical paradise in modesto, he'll give you a good deal.

Funny you mention that.

Since moving out more than than 75% of my live rock I've realized how ugly my bare-bottom tank is and have decided to add at least half an inch of sand.

According to the 'sand calculator' to cover half an inch of the tank bottom in sand I'd need: (L x W x D / 1728) x 100 pounds of sand or in my case 50# of sand.

So, after looking and looking online for sand I finally found a place that wasn't going to gouge me in shipping and handling prices. DrsFosterSmith!

They sell 40# bags of CaribSea seaflor for $31.99 and S&H handling is only $9; so I bought 2 bags or 80# of sand.

Other places will sell the bags for less (down to $25 per bag) then will charge $40 or more per bag for S&H!

Ted or Bernie at Tropical Haven will usually give a nice discount for bulk items. I used to work for Ted and he is a pure business man. If you cant find southdown tropical play sand, which is the sand used for childrens sand boxes, then that would be the best place to go.
