there is a yellow tang in there................ i think that tangs like softer algae though, dont they?

JxMetal
03/15/2006, 07:21 PM
I've noticed that yellow tangs like softer algae.

If it was a hippo or one of the larger types of tangs I think it would eat that stuff right up.

Thanks. The stuff in the tank is Neomeris Annulata, or as I like to call it, "miserable green weedy crap" Tangs wont touch it. It's like halimeda, calcium based algae. here you can see it closer...
http://reefcentral.com/gallery/data/500/11194new_TANG_W_1.jpg

I think I have to pull out all the rock and clean it manually at this point. I'm always open to a better (easier) plan though. Hermits and crabs nibble at it, urchin breaks it loose but i just have TOO much growing TOO quickly. I spent about 2 years building eveything real custom and in the mean time the tank itself got away from me.

dphins
03/15/2006, 07:52 PM
I doubt there is an easy way to rid your tank of all that algae.

scbadiver
03/15/2006, 07:59 PM
Yeah, I let the calcium level drop to about 100ppm and it really started to decline but then so did the corals, snails, and eveything else. As soon as I brought the calcium back up it took off strong as ever. I can hardly keep my level above 300ppm due to all of the algae. I'm thinking a case of cold ones, a big bucket of saltwater, and a day with the scrub brush will slow it down dramatically.

AIMFish
03/15/2006, 08:09 PM
Great looking tank scbadiver, what are the dimensions on that? For helping control your Neomeris I was going to suggest lowering calcium but you've tried that and can't keep it low do to other inhabitants :( Have you tried growing another type of algae for nutrient competition? If you did I would manually remove as much of the Neomeris as possible so the new algae has an easier start.

JxMetal
03/15/2006, 08:25 PM
I see some caulerpa behind it, so I guess that nutrient battle isn't being won either.

scbadiver
03/15/2006, 08:25 PM
Thank you. Tank is 96x24x24. I have about a 60 gallon fuge in the basement that I try to grow "good" stuff in. I can hardly get the caulerpa to grow though. I have tried different lighting, adding iron, adding/reducing current and nothing as really helped. I think there is just too much stuff so thats why I'm thinking about pulling the rock out and cleaning it. Believe it or not, that stuff is so tough you can pick up(or completely knock over) rocks just by pulling on 3-4 stalks!

jwalters103
03/15/2006, 08:37 PM
have you tried the seagrass and macroalgae forum? someone there might be a little more familiar and be able to help you get rid of it

ramtheory I keep the camera and vidoe camera close by to the tank for that very reason. I have trained my inverts well too. When I feed the crab he comes out of his hole and sits there. even if I remove the tongs and even mess with the tank he just sits there. KNida nice. The shrimp has no fear either. She came to the glass this morning while feeding and fanned her swimmers right in front allowing me to inspect her eggs. pretty cool stuff.

Looks like a wall hammer and a nice one good color. Doesn't even look like there is a sign of receding. From the person in Carthaga correct?

Mykayel
03/18/2006, 10:47 PM
Correct on both, form the guy in Carthage who had a great tank, and it is a wall type. Do you have any good tips on keeping it in good health, you make is sound as if they are difficult to keep.

It is hard to find a good specimen that is not receding thats all. I have had mine for a while and having good luck with it. Good lighting and water quality just like anything else and I target feed near the mouths with mysis. Not difficult to keep just pointing out the good score.

Thats an awesome pic Kent! What are you using for moonlight?
