Hi Folks,

Probably will get myself in trouble for this...

One specimen or one species of marine photosynthetic organism is an ALGA.

More than one are ALGAE.

Saying "microalgaes" or "macroalges" is a lot like saying "geeses" or "mices" or politicians.

Then there is Algea????

Sorry, pet peeve number 342 for this old college instructor.

Cheers, Ron

Hi Larry,

It isn't so much that people make misteaks speling.

And it has nothing to do with being "common" or not.

It is that folks don't even bother to try to find what is right.

Symptomatic of our society, maybe, sloppy thinking.

Cheers, Ron

Ron, Were you my high school latin teacher in your prior life? He'd throw an eraser at us if we messed up the singular and plural endings.

LOL Try having "Maras" for a last name and see how many get it right. "Hey, you related to that baseball player?" (Actually, I am--he changed the spelling to Maris because he got tired of the mis-pronunciations as well) Then there was this one: "Like Mars candy bars?"
Oops, sorry Ron. Got a little off-topic there. :)

Hi Larry. I'm going to continue with your tangent.

My last name is "Queen". I don't see how it could be spelled any other way. But I'd say that 9 times out of 10 when people are taking my name over the phone or over the counter or at the office..., I hear "Would you spell that for me?"!

Maybe I'm missing something?! http:\\home.pacbell.net\grqueen\pinkie.gif

Hi Larry, Grog, et alia,

All of this is symptomatic of the same problem.

Now - really how does this relate to reefs and the stuff we do to or put in them. A lot of people simply never bother to think things through (er, thru, er throo, er can you spell stronium).

Love this one => http:\\home.pacbell.net\grqueen\pinkie.gif

Hey Ron, tell'm how to pronounce Acropora :D

bigben

If my education serves me right, I'm guessing that the correct way is aCROPora, with the heavy syllable being on "crop." However, I hear so many people saying it as acroPORA. I always learned to put the influence on the third from the last syllable. Am I completely mistaken?

Sorry, bigben.
The Latin "acropora" is pronounced with silent consonants and withheld vowels:

" "

To throw a little gasoline on the flames...

You might be a redneck if when buying Christmas presents for your girl friend, your sister and your mother, you need to only get one present.

Ron, As my latin teacher in a prior life, isn't the emphasis on the antepenult, as it is with most words. (I'm afraid I'm having a flashback as I actually remembered the word antepenult)In Latin it would be aCROpora.Bigben, you have it right.

With all the skilled wordsmiths and grammatists on the board, it has become a challenge to be creative in draftings posts. As a result, I have developed a severe case of lethologica.
If this keeps up, we may have to call in the Vocabulary Police!
