That D60 must be very nice! I have D30 and I thought it produced as clean images as possible but now I see these reviews telling us that the noise level is even lower with D60. And twice the resolution of the D30...

What lenses do you have?

BTW, to get most from your camera, I strongly suggest you get yourself color profiling software. One of the best and cheapest is available here: http://www.ddisoftware.com/prism/
Highly recommended!

Awesome Greg....Looking forward to some even more excellent pics from you!

I keep trying to justify the hefty price tag for the D60...

wow- thanks everyone- good way to start my day :p
tatuvaaj- thanks a lot for that link- i will look into that asap.
lens-wise i have (all Eos) a 20, 24, 28-70, 100 macro, 80-200, 300 and both converters. for the close-up kind of stuff that i love to shoot (http://www.gregrothschild.com/bogrdn.htm) i have extension tubes too.
i wish i didn't have to go to work- i hate it when work gets in the way of life...

thanks Doug- i really appreciate that.
i know you love your D30 and from everything i've read it is such a great camera i kind of regretted not getting one when they came out. but instead i upgraded from the G1 to the G2- and what an upgrade it was... Canon really did an amazing job on the G2. so- i read all the hoopla about the D60 and decided to get one hoping Canon had done the same thing again- taken a great camera and made it lots better.
i haven't had much time to play with the new camera yet but what i've seen so far has been sooooo nice :D
i be verrrry happy

gregr,

You do shoot in RAW mode don't you? I've noticed that shooting in RAW mode and then converting to 16-bit TIFF results much better shadow detail than shooting in JPEG fine mode.

For RAW conversion you might want to take a look at Yarc Plus http://www.pictureflow.com/. It has some nice features, especially their "Artifact Removal Filter" is very good! It also allows you to assign any color profile to the photo.

Profiling the camera gives even more contrast range (plus better/more realistic colors).

you know, for a fish forum i sure get good camera advise on Reef Central :p
thanks for the Yarc link Tatu. i have been [happily] using Breezebrowser with my G2 and i was unaware of the shadow detail stuff in 16 bit tif mode, and i didn't know about the color profile business either. i appreciate the help.
i took a quick look at the Profile Prism website- i see that it costs $69 to get a color profile- is that how you get the camera profiled- by buying the profile and installing it via the usb cable? sorry for all the questions- i am trying to learn about the computer side of things and there is sooo much to learn...
greg
p.s.- thanks Henry :)

gregr,

With the $69 you'll get the profiling software and a specially made color target which you photograph (with the camera settings you intend to use mostly) and then you import the image to profiling software. So you can create as many profiles as you like, for example for different camera settings etc. So it is one time purchase only. And it will work with your next camera also (the software isn't camera specific in any way). And what's more, you can also profile your printer with the software! No more color casts or searching for that perfect paper...

To learn more about color profiles, see http://www.ddisoftware.com/qimage/icc.htm and http://www.quiknet.com/~frcn/ProfilePrism.html and http://www.ddisoftware.com/qimage/qimagehlp/icc.htm

ps. For printing you might want to take a look at Qimage Pro (http://www.ddisoftware.com/qimage/). I don't use anything else to print my images anymore...

i'm sold. a friend of mine has recommend Qimage Pro but i have Qprocrastinated.
thanks very much for taking the time to explain all that. i appreciate it and will go for it as soon as this annoying work stuff slows down.
