DIY Phosphate Filter - sort of

has anyone ever tried to use an old canister filter and fill it with different media and use it as a phosphate filter ?

whe I was keeping FOWLR's I used a magnum 350 with carbon, phosphate and nitrate sponge. I can't say that it worked well because algae was always a problem back then. A low flow phosphate reactor is a better tool but the canister will work at atleast some level but will require maint. to keep it and the media clean.
