let's see some Goby photos!
this shot, and the next two, were taken with a Canon G2, in aperture priority mode and with a flash on top of the camera.

Gregr, your pictures never fail to amaze me. Great looking gobies, any idea what kind that last one was? Awesome looking fish. Keep the photos coming.

what are those blue stalks? and do you have a high res copy of the first?

Yo Gregr; I'm thinking about going with a G2. I've got an ELPH 100 (as my digital walk-around) but find the zoom range too narrow. Clearly, this is a major upgrade. I know the specs. What's your hands on opinion?

thanks for all the comments- most appreciated :p
Jersey- that last Goby was labeled as a Barred Goby as i recall. i just tried to do a search on the fish database but it isn't working right now..................
just got off the phone with my friend at the lfs and he says that yes it is a Barred Goby (he didn't know the latin name).
Manderx- that blue coral is awesome isn't it?! it was only about 3 inches tall but the color you see in the pic is dead on- baby blue. the guy at the store said he has never seen one before and will be trying very hard to get more of them. he also said they were not sure of the correct name but he said they were calling it either a Lollipop Polyp or Blue Candy Torch Polyp. i asked him how much they are selling them for and he really didn't know since the one in the picture is the only one they had besides one other that they sold for $80 but it was smaller and didn't look too healthy. the guy who bought it said he didn't care he had to have it
64Ivy- my hands on opinion is that this is one great little camera. i have used it pretty hard for the last 4 months and it has performed superbly. totally consistent and excellent image quality. the high points (imho) are it's ease of use, incredibly long lasting battery, raw pic mode and overall image quality. i highly recommend it. i also recommend an additional flash to go on top.
best of luck,
greg
p.s.- i am happy to answer any specific questions about the G2... and of course show more samples :p

can you put up a cropped down copy of just the goby' head. those eyes are mesmerizing :eek1:

:(
this is a highly cropped version of one of the shots i took. the fish is only about an inch long so the head is really tiny- hence the grainly look of the photo.
wish i had one of them nikons :p

Just a bit of info...

Latin name for the Bar Goby is Ptereleotris zebra.

The cool blue thing is not actually a polyp. It is actually a colonial tunicate. Dr. Ron has said that they feed primarily on bacteria, although there is some speculation that this particular species is photosynthetic.

hi Marie-
i was just in the store to buy one of those cool little fishes (teeny tiny- that one is no more than one inch long)- the guy i spoke to last time said it was a Red Head Goby and they had some Red Head Gobies for sale... but it wasn't the same fish! the ones they had for sale did not have the same big red eyes
it's not in my Marine Fishes by Scott Michael either- sooo i don't know what it is. hopefully someone with more knowledge than i can enlighten us.
sorry,
greg

I love Gobies, and there are some GREAT pics here!
(didn't I read somewhere that there are more species of Goby than any other reef fish?)

Here's my randals (100k):

Greg, you guys in CA always get first pick of the cool fish/inverts....not fair!:D That fish in the picture looked sort of like a jawfish around the gills to me -- at least like my jawfish...seems like I read that dusky jaws have red or orange eyes, my blue-spot has orange eyes

Hey great pictures everyone :) Gobys are just so photogenic. The little guy with the red eyes is so cute.

Greg, please keep the G2 pics coming. My better half is just on the verge of purchasing one and would like to see some more samples :D Hmmm, on the other hand you'd better make them terrible ones then I could take the money put aside for the camera and put it in my 'bigger tank' fund ;)

thanks for the compliments!
LisaP- the G2 is a great little camera- your better half is going to love it.
but... i just ordered a Canon D60 :p :) :D :D :D so my G2 will probably see a lot less action in the future.
anyhow- another Goby photo- a Catalina Goby.

Greg,

Have you had any problems with the casing of the G2? There are recent reports of a crack developing on the back casing of this camera. See the link below:

no- i have not had any problems [whatsoever] with my G2.
**little rant here**
while i find dpreview to be extremely helpful, i find that there are quite a few "whiners" that post there. also, there are "trollers"- people that post outrageous [and unfounded] complaints just to stir things up. one has to read the posts with a bs filter if you know what i mean.
that statement does not discount the fact that many people have truly had this problem of the case cracking. my question is- how many G2's has Canon produced? i am sure it is a huge number so it is not surprising that some of them will have problems. my G1 had a problem- i sent it in for warranty repair and that was that.
the point is- there are going to be glitches and it is important to be aware of the potential, however- Canon (Nikon, Minolta, Sony, Olympus, etc.) is a reputable company so i would not let the [LOUD] complaints of a few have too much of an influence on your decision. my advise is to look at what the cameras are capable of and make your decision based on that.
**rant over** :D

SuperGook is correct...Catalina Gobies are cold water fish (In the 65-70 deg range I think). They seldom survive in the temperatures that we keep our reef tanks.

Ah, thanks for the good info. Catalina is out of my stocking list. Because I anticipate at least 80 degree on a hot day ..
