Here is some info on this year's IMAC...www.theimac.org
Just wondering if anyone else would like to go. A while back someone posted a sticky in our forum about club member discounts. At that time, the first member payed $150 and could bring up to 8 additional members for only $50 each. I'm not sure if that was a limited time thing. I sent an email to the person in charge to see if that still applies. My wife and I went to the first IMAC a few years ago and it was a very fun and educational experience. It is basically 3 days of the biggest experts in the hobby doing presentations. There is also a huge vendor section that has tons of vendors selling livestock and drygoods. Along with that, they also put together other things like a behind the scenes tour of the Shedd Aquarium. I see that the price for hotel rooms is $109 per night. My wife and I are cheap so what we did was went on priceline.com and got another hotel for like $40 per night and it ended up only being a couple miles away from the conference. That is what we will be doing again this year.
I would like to get an idea if anyone else is interested in going this year. Also, ticket prices go up at the end of this month.

Ok, I guess that was last year's deal. This year any club member can pay full price and bring a second member for free. So far it sounds like Eric (Lunchbucket), Grant, and I will be going. It will be a really fun time.

Hi All;
Well it’s only a few months to the International Marine Aquarium Conference (IMAC) which will be in Chicago April 28, 29 and 30. Most of the speakers have their abstracts in:
Jake Adams, “Water Flow Speed is Critical in Our Aquaria
Adam Blundell, “Filtration Methods in a Natural Reef Aquarium
Eric Borneman
Bob Fenner, “Organism Selection for the Saltwater Aquarist
Anthony Calfo, “A Call to Farms. More Efficient Coral Propagation Techniques
Tullio Dell Aquilla, “Advanced Lighting Technologies for Aquariums
Todd Gardner, “Seahorse Nutrition in Aquaculture
Dr. Sanjay Joshi, “Designing Reef Aquarium Systems – Thwarting Murphy’s Laws
John Kelly, “Goniopora – A New Beginning
Allen LaPointe, “Water Quality Monitoring and Data Interpretation
Martin Moe
Mike Paletta, “Setting Up a LARGE Aquarium
Steven Pro, “Recent Experiments with ‘Reef Safe’ Treatments
Dr. Adelaide Rhodes , “Culturing Copapods
Dana Riddle, “Tide Pools of Kahalu’u Hawaii. What they tell us about Reef Aquaria
Zack Schwartz, “K-12 Education and the Science Behind it
Walt Smith (Banquet Speaker)
Julian Sprung “Invasive Species-Legend, Psychology, Science and the Hobby
The theme of the conference is “The Science Behind Our Hobby.
Registration is currently $125 for a full registration but it goes to $149 next week. And we have a special going on right now. If you register for the full conference you can bring a friend for FREE. Just enter their name and email address in the space marked “Additional Names before clicking “Add to Cart. With special IMAC hotel rates of $109/nite, IMAC is about the least expensive weekend conference you can attend.
In conjunction with FragExchange.com, Eric, Anthony and Steven will also put on coral fragging demos with the frags being given away. Frags will also be given away all weekend long at the FragExchange booth.
We also have been getting more items donated to the Big Raffle with the Grand Prize of a 9 day trip to Fiji for 2 donated by Walt Smith International.
The Crowne Plaza Hotel has already sold out our block of rooms but we just added more. So hurry over to www.theimac.org and sign up before the rates increase and we exhaust our new bigger room block.
Cheers,
Dennis

Hi Travis;
That's right. The Fiji Trip for 2 will be raffled off at the Banquet. But we have enlarged the Banquet Hall to accomodate just about everybody.
And a full registration with the Banquet is now going for just $125 for the next week.

This sounds like a great trip. If there was any way I could ensure I'll be free at that time I'd sign on. But April's usually a very busy time for me.
Does the conference itself tend to sell out? If I discover in late March that I'll be free what are the chances I could still get a ticket even if its at the higher rate?

I'm pretty sure the conference won't/can't sell out. The only problem you may run into would be hotel accomodations with late notice.

Hi Grant;
I thought I sent you an email about this, but maybe it got lost. You have 2 full registrations for yourself and Eric and an extra Banquet ticket for Rachelle. You and Rachelle also have the Shedd Tour.
Please let me know if this is not your understanding.
Cheers,
Dennis

Hey Grant,
I'm pretty sure that banquet seating is determined by when you register. For example, the earliest people to register get seats closest to the speaker and the later ones get seats in the back, and even in the adjacent room after the first one fills up. So we probably won't have a choice on where we sit, unless we trade seats with others. But if we can choose, my wife and I would love to sit with the rest of you. Maybe Dennis can confirm this. My wife and I haven't even registered yet so we are going to be in the waaaay back.:(
I didn't realize you were bringing your wife also. You two will have a lot of fun. When do you plan on going there and coming back? My wife and I are probably going to go the Monday before and then come back Sunday evening after the conference is finished. There is a ton of stuff to do in Chicago. We will also be going to the Shedd tour so we can all ride together on that one. Funny story: the last time we went to IMAC, we went on the Shedd tour. There were 2 buses of people that went. We were in the back of the last bus and the last ones to get inside. When we got in, we didn't see a single person that came on our buses. So we just looked around and figured we would catch up with the group later. After an hour or so we did see some familiar faces only to learn that the behind the scenes tour was as soon as we got there and we missed it.:( It was still worth it anyways. The Shedd is a very cool place. But this year I really need to see the 2-story skimmer that everyone was talking about.

i hope that we can all sit together. i'm trying to talk the wife into going w/ me but she doesn't want to spend her days alone or w/ people she barely knows. so i might be solo.
not sure if i'm gonna drive myself or not...prolly will. it will save about 100-150bucks depending on which car i take. and i won't have to stay an extra night to fly out monday morning. i'll just get loaded up on caffeine and drive all the way home sunday night/monday morning. Travis if you are driving back Sunday can we travel together in a pack?
10hrs alone in a car will suck! guess it is a good thing i got an ipod from my bosses and have like 5days of music on it :D
i think i'm shacking up w/ Bob from ReefMania friday and sat night. i want to come thursday or wed and see my uncel who lives in Chicago. not sure if i'm gonna do the Shedd aquarium tour but if i'm gonna be there Thursday morning i might as well :D depends on when i leave. heck if i drive wed night i can hit the aquarium tour and hten check in Thur for my room and save staying a night...i'm cheap :D the more i see how much this will cost the less i want to go :(

We finally got around to registering last night. I checked and since we were so late to register our banquet seats will be in the adjacent room where we will have to watch Walt on a projection TV.:( I guess that is what we get for registering so late.
If anyone is worried about hotel costs there are cheaper options out there. We went with priceline.com and got a suite at the Rennaissance Suites for only $50 per night for 7 nights. It looks like a really nice hotel and is within a mile or 2 from the conference.

Yes there is a special 2 for 1 deal for members of reef clubs. Read on.
Well it is only a couple months to IMAC. The International Marine Aquarium Conference will be in Chicago April 28, 29 and 30. We have gotten in topics for nearly all of the speakers:
Jake Adams, “Water Flow Speed is Critical in Our Aquaria
Adam Blundell, “Filtration Methods in a Natural Reef Aquarium
Eric Borneman
Bob Fenner, “Organism Selection for the Saltwater Aquarist
Anthony Calfo, “A Call to Farms. More Efficient Coral Propagation Techniques
Tullio Dell Aquilla, “Advanced Lighting Technologies for Aquariums
Todd Gardner, “Seahorse Nutrition in Aquaculture
Dr. Sanjay Joshi, “Designing Reef Aquarium Systems – Thwarting Murphy’s Laws
John Kelly, “Goniopora – A New Beginning
Allen LaPointe, “Water Quality Monitoring and Data Interpretation
Mike Paletta, “Setting Up a LARGE Aquarium
Steven Pro, “Recent Experiments with ‘Reef Safe’ Treatments
Dr. Adelaide Rhodes, “The Role of Copopods in Marine Reefreeping
Dana Riddle, “Tide Pools of Kahalu’u Hawaii. What they tell us about Reef Aquaria
Zack Schwartz, “K-12 Education and the Science Behind it
Walt Smith (Banquet Speaker), “The Life and Death of a Coral Reef
Julian Sprung “Invasive Species
Eric, Anthony and Steven will also conduct Coral Propagation Workshops, sponsored by FRAGExchange.com. And the FRAGExchange booth will be giving away frags all weekend long at their booth.
Registration is just $149 and along with special hotel rates of $109/nite, IMAC is the least expensive weekend conference you can attend. But, to make it even a better deal, especially for reef societies, for a limited time we are offering a special 2 for 1 rate. That’s right you can get 2 full registrations, including the Speakers, Banquet, Trade Show and the Big Raffle for $149. This is NOT mentioned on the IMAC website www.theimac.org but if you click on the Registration picture there is a space marked “Additional Names right under the “Add to Cart button where you can enter the name and email address of your guest.
You will both get full registrations, including Banquet. This offer is for new registrations only and cannot be combined with any other discounts. Then you can split the cost with your guest, so it will only cost you $74.50 each. NOTE: If you have clicked on the “Add to Cart button before, the page that shows up may indicate 2 or 3 registrations. This is because your browser remembers that you have been there before and it will add another one. Just check the “remove button, “update cart and start over.
We are also having a raffle to give away a free registration to IMAC. Just visit the IMAC site www.theimac.org and click on Forum in the upper right. Then scroll down to the “Free IMAC Registration forum and make a post. You will have to register first so we will have your email address and can notify you if you win.
Because of the way we are staggering speakers, although we are using 2 speaker rooms, you can actually see ALL the speakers; you do not have to make choices of who you want to see.
There are just a few spots still open for the “behind-the-scenes tour of the Shedd Aquarium. Their new Wild Reef exhibit is now complete.
We are just getting in products donated by major companies for the Big Raffle but we already have the Grand Prize. It is a 9 day trip for 2 to Fiji donated by Walt Smith International. Other prizes include a fully-equipped 76 gallon tank from Oceanic Systems and a double MH light from Coralife. And, so far we have 5 livestock dealers exhibiting!
So hurry over to www.theimac.org and sign up. We’ll see you in April.
Cheers,
Dennis Gallagher, Chairman
International Marine Aquarium Conference

Maybe I can help? Just go to the post you want to copy/quote, and click on the "quote" button on the right hand side. This will take you to the reply page, and it will have a full copy of the post you want to reference. From there, you can just edit out the last part of the post, or delete whatever part of it you don't want. Just make sure that when you do, keep the parts that say '[ QUOTE][ B] and [/B ][/QUOTE ]' intact. (I had to add a space in front of the quote and behind the /quote or the computer will read it as code and you wouldn't see the text. Normally there would be no space inside the brackets.) The rest of it can be deleted or altered as you please.
If you're still having problems, here's a link to show you more about the code for this forum (and many others, I might add). It's called "Visual Basic" or "vB" for short.http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/misc.php?action=bbcode#buttons

HaHa, that will be fun. I do enjoy having people over to see my tank just as much as I enjoy going around seeing other people's tanks. But nothing compares to IMAC. I mean 3 full days of nothing but reef talk. It doesn't get any better than that.:D

Hi tangdiver;
If we can't bury the thread I might as well update it.
Well, we have just completed IMAC ’06 and it was a great success. We had more attendees and vendors than any previous International Marine Aquarium Conference.
We are still updating the IMAC website but we have enough of it set up for 2007, that we can offer you a special registration rate. In 2007, IMAC will be at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Chicago on June 1, 2 and 3. The registration rate on the website is $125 but if you have attended IMAC in the past you can register for just $99, for a full registration including speakers, the Reception, the Banquet and a great trade show. Just go to the IMAC site www.theimac.org and go to the Program Book Advertising Page and scroll down to the “Make a Donation” button.
When you click on that button, you will see a screen with registration at $99. This offer will be good until July 30 so hurry over to the IMAC site and take advantage of this offer. If you have previously attended an IMAC, you know what a great show we put on. With hotel rates of just $113/nite, IMAC is the lowest cost weekend conference you can attend.
We would certainly like to have you back.
Thanks,
Dennis
