I finaly had the time and the money to set up a new tank. So here's a list of my equipment

Oceanic 20H
10g Sump with AquaC Remora and a Mag 9.5 return pump
One Seio 1100 in tank underneath the Overflow Box in Back Right corner
250w DE AB10k housed in a Custom Pendant with Hamilton M80 HQI Ballast, remote
Bottum of tank... Star Board of course!
30 lbs. of HIRocks.com's BEST Base Rock
The stand is ugly, but finctionaly, so I will be makeing an Aluminum cover up sheild some time this week
And lastly, for this tank, All SPS will have been aquacultured, atleast 2 generations. Nothing from the wild.

I think that's it as far as equipment goes.

Here are some FTSs that I have from the begining

Looking good. Try using carbon in your sump. I personally have found out that this seems to accelerate coralline growth with regular water changes.

Yep, I started running carbon just yesterday. I have seen a dramatic difference in water clarity :)

Thanks Jim :D

I plan on starting to stock in mid Febuary. I want to give the base rock alittle more time to turn live so I will have abit more stable environment.

is your return on a SQWD? how's the interaction between the SEIO and the return?

Travis Savant

No SCWD on this tank. I'm not sure what you mean by "interaction"?

was just asking how chaotic the flow was. the combo that you have setup must whip water around in there pretty well. i also have a SEIO (820 along with a couple of MJ 900s and a 600) and have had some trouble getting flow as "non-laminar" as possible in my 26 bow.

Travis Savant
01/09/2006, 08:44 PM
I have all of the "direct" flows hitting the glass, so it bounces off and I have ALOT of random flow.

Travis Savant
01/13/2006, 09:02 PM
Just to let you all know, I am going to be adding a RBTA to the Left side of the tank. I am going to allow the RBTA to have half of the tank, and heavily stock the other side with SPS.

I'm going to get the RBTA first, and will probly be my first major purchase for this tank other than the start up. I'll be buying it in late Febuary.

In this picture, you can see the Green coraline growing underneith the rock. The reason for this is because the light is reflecting off of the Star Board and allowing it to grow lol.

It's great, just be sure to build a Stockman Standpipe for it, because with out one, it's noisey.

Travis Savant
01/29/2006, 06:03 PM
uuughhh...

I just moved the aquascape over an inch so that I could use my bag float to clean the glass because the bottom rock on the left was to close and I was unable to clean the glass next to it. So I moved it over and...um..well... I have found two things wrong with my tank.

The overflow box is to damn big and the seio 1100 is to damn big.

Here's what I'm going to do to fix this problem.
First I am going to get a CPR like Overflow box so that I can save the most amount of space in the tank. Secondly I am going to remove the Seio 1100 and construct a CLS to replace it.

For the CLS I am thinking a pump that is rated for around 500GPH. That would leave me with a turn over rate of 65x-70x which is still good considering this is a 20g tank. I think I am going to use a SCWD and have it all on the right side of the tank, so that the tank is only viewable from two sides (it kind of already is because the tank is close to a dresser draw cabinet).

Comments and/or Suggestions?

Travis Savant
01/31/2006, 07:28 PM
Here's a FTS from today. As you can see, the Overflowbox and Seio are realy in the way. Can't wait to order the new overflow box and the parts for the CLS :D

Travis Savant

For the CLS, I want to use a manafold inside the tank to run along the top of the tank under the water so the trim will be able to hide the pipes.

Here's a rough diagram of what I want to create.

Travis Savant
02/02/2006, 10:49 PM
Ok, I have made up my mind on my desired fish.

Starcki Damselfish
Fridmani Pseudochromis
Four Lind Wrasse

I know the damselfish is well...a damselfish, but the other two fish are also aggressive, so I think that they will all be able to cohabitate if I add them all at the same time.

Ok, I have just finished cutting the pipe for the closed loop spray bar and fitting it to the tank, now all that's left to do is drill holes, glue, and turn on. I'm going to be using my Mag 9.5 on the CLS, and use a Hydor L35 Sletz (450 GPH) in the sump. That will alow me to run a fuge in the sump.

I spoke to the local reefer (1 1/2 hours away) that I will be getting the frags from, and he said I can pick them up on Sunday the 12th.

Here's what I am deffinantly getting, but not all that I am getting :D

nice selections....i know what u mean i have a 190g semi reef that just got up and running about 2-3 months ago just started adding coral and my wallet is on fire!! i want it to be a full reef one day. i will still be saying that in like years to come. lol

Travis Savant
02/05/2006, 09:17 AM
I'v decided to go a different route with my CLS. It's going to incorperate 3/4" PVC instead of 1/2" PVC. I'm going to be using lock-line, and that is going to be the only visible parts inside the tank, other than the intake. It will have four outlets on a manafold. One on each side, and two in the front. I will secure the PVC to the trim by drilling a few holes in the trim, and zip-tieing the PVC to it.

kabal2
02/05/2006, 10:08 AM
Travis im almost sure somebody asked you this before but why you dont drill the tank???, at least for the overflow, that way you will have even more space and i think at the long run will be better en case you loose power, btw nice tank

Yeah! I got some more SPS, and there's a story...I get to the LFS yesterday, and the owner, a good friend of mine, has just returned from the airport with a new shipment of fish and coral, mostly fish. So I wait around, and while I am waiting, he gets me to help him put some of the bags floating. He got 8 boxes in and each box had like a minimum of 8 bags. So there was plenty of fish and coral to be acclimated. After we were done putting them all floating, there was a huge rush of all different people, some fresh some salt. So, the owner got me to help bag some fish for a customer, but most customers where just eyeballing the new stuff, which where still floating. Most people just bought the unacclimated fish in the bags that they where shipped in. After the huge influx of people, I got to pick out my SPS. I first picked out the Bush Acro, but then the owner offered to frag the Tricolor for me, so I said I'd give him $60 for the two and he agreed on it. Then he smiled, and tossed in the Orange Cap for FREE!!!

Here's the pictures, I couldn't wait any longer lol. The polyps aren't fully extended, but you get the jest.

Orange Cap (Freebie!), I accidentally broke it when I was gluing it, but it's all good.
http://www.savantcutting.com/Travs-Stuff/20H/2-11-06/Oragne-Cap.jpg

Bush Acro, this is most likely my favorite piece. The picture doesn't do its color justice, it's really a light, light teal color.

The Tricolor with it's nuclear green PE :D.

More Bad News...
My A. Validia (Tri Color) has started to bleach. I think it is because it's dead center of the tank, and right under the MH, so I am going to cut my lighting back to a 6 hour photoperiod. From what I can tell, most people on RC run these lights for 6 HPD (Hours Per Day) any ways. Here is a before and after picture.

Try to make a couple more flater surfaces for the sps.Rock looks good but you need less clutter. How is the heat issue with the 250w M.H? Thinkin of upgarding my 20gL lighting.Have you been adding calcium or are you thinking Nano C.reactor?

Travis,

I think that one of the reasons that the smaller tort piece STNed is due to the epoxy. With smaller frags, I've found that they tend to not do well when immediately mounted with a lot of epoxy, and seem to like being mounted first with superglue onto a small rock. After they heal a little, I do the superglue/epoxy sandwiching to get it onto the rockwork. I think that when they are small, the excess heat given off by the epoxy curing causes them to stress.

Tank is lookin good though! The monti caps should start plating pretty fast and will look awesome down there.

Yeah I had the same problem with some small frags I got in the past, but I'm glad I learned about superglue gel haha.

hmm the valida doing any better? You might want to consider switching to a higher kelvin bulb if the PAR is too high for the SPS in the center. 14k might be a nice compromise.

Travis Savant
02/20/2006, 07:40 PM
I think the Validia died because there was either too much water flow, which is now fixed, or there was too much light (8 hours per day) I have now fixed that by cutting back to 6 hours per day. The Silver Bullet is on top higher than the Validia and it is doing well.

I think that I am really liking that "silver bullet".

From your pictures it doesn't seem like you have much corraline growth, have you seen any?

Your tank looks immaculate, but I haven't seen any snails or hermits or anything. Do you have a cleanup crew?

Keep up the good work.

cmondo, I have some Coraline, but the lighting isn't letting it grow in the well lit areas. I have more coraline in the caves than I do on top. The coraline is a dark green and I am starting to see some pinks and purples. I have 6 or 7 snails and they do a nice job. I had a hermit, but I think he died or he is a realy cood hidder.

Thanks mr.bear :)

Very nice :) I have no experience with SPS but I really like montis and am starting to get the SPS bug...I think the solution might be a nano like yours. If you don't mind me asking, what is a ballpark figure for what the setup cost you? I don't want to offend you, but I really like your tank :)

Around $1200 without livestock.

I just noticed in that cali tort growth pic there is a small purple piece that looks to be the same color as the tort at the bottom of the epoxy. Is that another piece growing out at the bottom?

Travis Savant
02/27/2006, 09:12 AM
It was a small fragment that fell off when I had to frag the Tort, I think the snails moved it and it got kicked up in the current, so I have no idea where it is now.

aural
02/27/2006, 10:29 AM
that is a hella sweet tank... i must say that 1200 not including livestock seems a bit steep to me. I'm setting up a custom built 40 gal with starphire glass and a built in sump w/ remora and a 250 watt DE fixture and i'm under 1200 bucks with a custom stand included.

but anyway - i like your tank... where do you get your SPS from? My local shops dont get any good sps. (and if they do they keep it for themselves!)

great looking tank Travis! it makes me want to upgrade my PC to a MH :D

how do you like the hang on overflow box? i used to have one awhile back, and every time there was a blck out, it used to flood the sump everytime the power came back on. is there a way (safer) to prevent that?

Travis Savant
03/13/2006, 07:02 AM
Sounds like you had too small of a sump or there was too much water in the sump. You see my sump is a standard 10g tank and when the pump is on it only holds about 5 gallons of water. So that way when the pump is off it will be able to hold up to another 5 gallons.

Hope that helped :)

Travis, how do you control your coraline? I don't see any... ???

Travis Savant
03/13/2006, 03:24 PM
Easy, I didn't start off with much Coraline algae at all and therefore I don't have much to clean. I can honestly say that I have never had to scrape coraline algae in this tank.

Are you dosing kalk or do you have a calcium reactor? The mag 9.5 is plumbed through the closed loop only I take it, not through the sump?

Looks killer .. keep it up!

Either a Fridmani Psudochromis or a Yellow Accessor. I gave him those two choices and which everone he gets in first is the one I will take. If he gets them both at the same time I'm gonna have to look long and hard and pick the better of the two specimens.

I bet your starcki isn't too keen on any new tankmates. I put a springeri in with an established starcki and it was ugly. I ended up removing the starcki. Four lines can be a little nasty too. Get yourself a steenei, he'll be able to hold his own.

Travis Savant

I've seen the Pusdochromises at the LFS before. Mean *** little guys. I think it will be able to show the starcki what's up.

Definitely don't put a steenei in your tank, they've got big teeth. I have a male in a 37 Oceanic just for him, he is by far the most aggressive fish I have ever seen. He is always ready to scrap, but I love him.
