I admit I am horribly biased, but I just can't stand clownfish...

I want to get a goby, but some other fish might be cool too. I am only planning on putting one small fish in, maybe 2 at most. I have 24 gallons to work with(I got the post 9/2005 jbj nano, so hopefully it holds out for me)

I am not a big fan of clown gobies - I like the wacky appearance and mannerisms of watchman type gobies more, but I am looking for something that not everyone and their mother has. I want a moderately easy fish to care for, nothing like a mandarin or whatnot that has a highly specialized diet oe environmental requirements. Any suggestions?

Would a small prawn goby or the like fare well with a firefish? Or would they likely quarrel?

I had a 6-line in my 55, and he was the least interesting fish I ever seen. He did eat all the pods overtaking my tank though.

Yasha haze goby and Randall's shrimp. Very cool pair. (just got a pair myself) Yellow or blue assessor. Neat habit of swimming upside down occasionally.

IMO the shrimp/goby pair would be boring alone in a 24 gallon tank, if you ever saw them.

A lot of the gobies/blennys are perching fish and wouldn't be out and in the water column.

Pair of Banggai Cardinals ? They're passive but without other fish they will be out more.

bi colour blenny

Got one in my 15g (only fish, he can go in the 29 if that isn't OK). Loads of character compared to my YWG (hides all the time, never see him).

Midas blenny might be cool too? Don't know, might get too big for a 24.

I have a pair of bangaii cardinals and a gold stripe clown in my 24. The bangaii's (being much larger than the clown) are out and about pretty much all the time and are nice to watch. The clown adds some amusement.

Are blennies really a good choice in a nano? Seems like the algae eating ones at least might have trouble finding sufficient diet and may not adapt to other foods.
