Well guy's I did it. Went out and bought the items needed to build a stand for a 55 gal. To my surprise it was very easy. I finished it in just a few hours. I will post a couple of pics in a few or tomorrow morning. All that is left is to skin it and stain it. I will stain tomorrow and skin sometime later in the month when I get a few more dollars to purchase the 1/4 oak or birch plywood. No really sure what I want to use yet.In any case thank you to all of you here who gave me advice on doing this as well as the inspiration. Reeffing is an addiction I hope I never lose.

No way, well as they say dollar short and a day late :). I still have some things to do to it but they are cosmetic (stain Skin etc). Can do that bit by bit. Getting ready to put a small stand (just legs and a 3/4 top)together with left over wood for the 10g (only about 7 inches tall) I found being thrown out will walking to the market. I believe it was used it for hamsters.

make sure you wash it good before using it. Use vinager to wash it after you wash it with water.

Ok I will make sure. Thanks for the tip. I just measured the glass it is 1/8". Wil that be ok to use as a sump running 300 - 500 gph of water?

The frame is a mix of 2x4 2x6 4x4 the wood that covers it is 1x6 1x8 some thing like that the main thing I wanted to do with the stand was make it so the tank sits inside of it so the black frame of the tank is hidden here it is stained with the canopy..http://reefcentral.com/gallery/data/585/109384stand2.jpg

Thats what I am doing with my stand. It is a work in progress that will be done over time. I have t he main thing done so I can put the tank on it but will frame out the rim about 1" - 2" up so it appears that the tank is sitting inside it. All you will end up seeing is glass and what's inside the tank.

Sweet it will look good what I did was bought some rounded 1/4 circle molding and put around the top of the stand and bottom of canopy and some corner molding for the corners.. the corners are not attached they just sit behind the stand and canopyhttp://reefcentral.com/gallery/data/505/109384fulltank.jpg

Cool, I am going to use moulding as well except the corners are going to be sort of like the molding you find in old colonial or victorian homes. They look like pillars sort of like this....

hah,, it looks like is a good DIY stand thread here. I have seen Nate's stand and it looks great. I will be in Edwardsville sometimes soon and will check Dweeler's tank and he will be going to bigger tank too.

Sounds good Mo. I like nates stand, he has that wrap around effect that hides the bottom rim of the tank.
