Does Ozone count? :D
I do use a filter sock as well for the bigger junk
But my water is like crystal :)

I used to use that diatom powder stuff on my Discus tanks, made a mess half the time turned the tank white with the powder but the big canister filter it was in cleaned it right back up and did a great job on polishing the water
But never used it in any of my salt set ups

Does it remove the small food particles the corals like?

it filters down to like 1 micron

What is sacrificed as a result?

i would think that running this full time would take away the phytoplankton and benificial creatures in the water column. i know most fw tanks they run it just to clear up the water. i was wondering if any sw reef keepers use it. I know i cleaned the filters in my sea horse tank and added some carbon and the water is very clear now.

That's what I suspect would happen. Carbon seems to work fine for me, and I imagine it removes a number of contaminants and improves water quality in ways that polishing can't.
