Are you going to use it external of internal J?

No :D ... but just want to let you know that mag pump add a lot of heats... It's better if you get an external pump. I have diamond bits if you need to drill glass tank :)

OK, that might be an option. I've never done an external pump though, so might need some advice from you in that area. What pump would you recommend? I want something to have about 1500gph at 5ft.

Just checked out the externals at marinedepot. Out of my price range for the flow rate. So.. still looking for mag 24. thanks

Is it gonna be a close loop?? I don't know how you can get 1500GPH out of an overflow.
I don't know much about external pump. I think Sequence pump is a good pump.

Well its an acrylic tank, with an overflow that handles 1200gph so far. I was planning to drill the back and add 1 more overflow tube. Think that will work?

Not sure :D .. just make sure you test with fresh water before fill it up.
How big is the tank anyway??

That is fast.. Hopefully that won't add a lot of heat to your tank... A lot of people use Mag pump external too...

actualy the mag 18 is the sweet spot in mag pumps, almost the same power as a mag 12, but when you go to a mag 24 its a power hog... I have used all mag pumps and the 36 are awsom but they are noisiy, I have 1-2 18s laying around here, but they too put out a far bit of noise.

and the Mag Drives do add a fair bit of heat... which at this time of year is not really an issue, but come Spring/Summer it will/might be, so be prepared :)

Yeah, I'm already planning for that. Might even swap out for a smaller pump during the hottest parts of the year. Not sure yet. Also have to look into a chiller.
