Hi Finatic,
I agree. Tangs are always on the move and they are really fast. I almost always have to use my flash in order to get a pic of them.

Very nice! I was just fooling around trying to pan fast enough to catch him...no flash on that one...I hate what the flash does to the colors, so I have to take lotsa shots to get a good one...gotta love digital cameras!
Here is one of the Sohal that I used to have.

Finatic- i'm really impressed by the panning shot you did- that seems like an impossible trick but you sure pulled it off.
i'll be trying that one tomorrow :p
this is a shot taken from one of the coral tanks at my lfs. it took forever to get one in focus...

p.s. Doug- your sailfin is the coolest (they are my favorite of the tangs)

I agree the Desjardini is one of my favorites....here is mine. They are very hard to capture....I was actually taking a pic of the gorgonian when he swam into view. :D

Hi Everyone,
With the pictures that you are showing here, maybe tangs are not that hard to photograph. ;)
Great pics everyone!
Doug
These are tough fish to catch on film, or should I say silicon? ;) Ok, here is one of my Powder Blue.

Here's my tang. This is the only fish I've ever named! :)
Don't make him make you an offer you can't refuse. Just give him some nori! :D
He's also my autosig pic.

Doug,
Tried one with the flash a few minutes after he woke up...I like the detail, but I gotta work on the white balance!

All these pics are so great, everyone! Keep up the great work, folks! :)
Hi Jeff,
Did you use the flash on your Tony S's picture? That is really good a shot. You often see a lot of yellow tang shots but yours is so crisp and close up.
Good job!

Doug,
Yeah, I used the built-in flash on my Nikon CoolPix 990. It was shot at a slight downward angle I think.
I also have Photoshop 6.0 to help with the levels and brightness/contrast.
And it helps that Tony likes to strike a pose from time to time. :D
Oh and thank you so much for the compliment! I've learned so much about taking better pictures on this forum both from you and everyone else. It's fast becoming another hobby! :p

whoa...how come the pic is so big?
when i upload it to my webspace it's not that big.
can you guys tell me how to fix it?
I hope he will start eating, my LFS was nice enough to give it to me, thinking it might eat in a reef tank.
He is very thin, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
I've tried a lot of different foods and nothing yet.
Suggestions anybody?
-Kedd
OK here are a few pics of my tangs in various tanks. I set shutterspeed to 250 (nikon 950) and just focus in a certain area that a tang usually comes to then anticipate and shoot. I anticipate because of the lag between depressing the button and the camera actually taking a shot.
They do move around a lot and doesn't take long before it comes into view. I have enough lighting in the tank to not require a flash and this helps quite a bit because using a flash can result in a harsh picture.

Awesome pics, Tubs! Nice technique too. I'll be trying that. How did you have enough light to run your shutter at 250? You must have MH's over you tank I take it. Excellent pics.
Hey Jeff,
Thanks. Yeah those 400 watters make it a huge difference.

Hey you're the John Susbilla from SEABay! D'oh! I didn't notice at first.
What happened to the 2002 Western Marine Conference? :( Last year was my first conference and I had a blast! Especially with it being in Monterey.
Say, Charles Delbeek is coming to the SFAS to give a talk on June 7th. Any chance SEABay can get him give a talk around then too?
Sorry this was off topic. Hey, nice tangs! ;)
