Wow great pictures! What does the macro lens do for you? I have a Nikon 995 ....this is a picture I took without a macro lens of my birds nest, but it is not as good as I want...will a macro lens make it better? Thanks!

great photos!
i love shooting close-ups (and now that spring is here i will be out hunting dragonflies and butterflies with my macro lens :D ).
Myreef- in this case it's apples and oranges- Doug's camera is a digital SLR- like a standard 35mm camera it takes different lenses... which is unlike most digital cameras- they have fixed lenses. you can zoom in and out, and add close-up filters (diopters) to the front, but you can't take the lens off and put a different one on like you can with an SLR (stands for single lens reflex).
a true 'macro' lens will achieve a 1:1 magnification ratio. what that means is the subject will be just as big on film as it is in real life. hope this makes sense...
for your Nikon you can add a telephoto adaptor to get more magnification, or close-up filters. but from everything i've heard (and seen- i owned a 990 for a couple of weeks before it was stolen) the 995 is capable of amazing close-ups without any filters at all. it's just a matter of how much magnification you want.
with an SLR you can do all kinds of stuff to increase your magnification: 2x or 1.4x converters, extension tubes, diopters, reverse lenses etc. Canon makes a macro lens that is capable of doing 5:1 (wow!!!). with that lens you could fill the frame with one little polyp!
