What fish can I put in 2.5? I'm leaning towards a Catalina goby, but a mandarin would be bad ***. Is it doable?

No mandarins feed off of copepods only you cannot come close to sustaining enough copepods in a 2.5. Catalina gobies need cold water about 68 degrees so you can keep the catalina gobie with no coral or get something else.

Damn, I was hoping you could get mandarins to take frozen. Any other cool options? Will a mantis shrimp get too big?

A fish in a 2.5 will produce quite a bit of bioload, and feeding it wil produce even more. Skip the fish and add a few sexy shrimp or a peppermint, or a porcelin crab

the best thing would be a small mantis, n. wenn. or something along those lines... they rock!

A mantis shrimp is my first choice, but where do I find specific species? I found one at liveaquaria.com but it is a larger kind.

For a N. Wenn. you can go to pretty much any LFS that gets live rock from FL or the caribbean (sp?) and help them unpack the rock that comes in. I have gotten all my mantis that way. Not to mention a couple porcelain crabs and the such.

Just fyi you can, but it's generally hit-or-miss, and a mandarin would still be a very very very bad option for such a small tank. I'd go for a clown goby unless you have some corals that they might damage.
