Its gonna help no matter what, but obviously you would be better off with a larger fuge like 10 gallons but I dont think it will hurt. Im doing a DIY AC 110 fuge on my 15.

so about how much would it cost to set up a 10 gallon sump? of course my tank isnt drilled so id have to get some kind of external over flow.... would it end u pconsting just as much to buy one of those nifty HOB aquafuges? they can be pricey it seems, but they are all inclusive and some even have a skimmer...

Depends on the overflow. You get what you pay for. Lifereef is the best overflow out there, guaranteed to never lose syphon in a power outage. Amiracle is a close second. CPR's are crap, which is why they are inexpensive. For the price of a Lifereef overflow box, you could buy the 12" aquafuge and a 13W strip light to go over it and have a nice little set up. Love those aquafuges. ;)

U-tube overflow - it will work just fine. Amiracle overflows are the same concept as is the top of the line, the Lifereef overflow.

i just got an aquafuge PS (large) off ebay, looks like the problem is solved. i know i could prolly set up a better fuge, maybe even with less money (but prolly not those overflows are pricey!!!!!), but for convience and for what im trying to do i think it will work great. plus it knows out 2 birds with one stone: a decent sized fuge with a protien skimmer. thanks for the replies yall!
