Hey guys,
I want to drill a 20 gal tank to use as my sump for the skimmer and pumps. Anyone have a 1-3/4" hole drill that can be used for glass, or know where I can buy one? Local glass shops want $25 per hole and won't guarantee the work. I'd rather attemp it myself.
Thanks,
Greg

Greg, home depot sells a 2" bit for $10

You'll have to order it online bc no hd sells it around here.

go to www.homedepot.com

and search:

These can be used to drill glass?

I also saw a carbide hole drill for ceramic tile, sku#289582. Do you think this would work.

it will work fine on glass Greg, just takes longer than a diamond tip. You'll have to make a dam, and use a portable drill press , and a good screw gun or drill.

Run a search on RC for glass drilling, this topic came up alot.

I have it all except the bit, so if your intrested, let me know.

As far as the one you listed, I have no clue. Looks a little weird. The bit is $15, so you might just want to have it done professionally. Or not drill it at all, that's what I'm thinking of doing:

Thanks John, that's a good plan for the return pump but what I really need to do is plumb the skimmer into the sump. The skimmer return cannot have any back pressure, and there isn't enough room in the stand to elevate the skimmer high enough so the return will be over the side of the sump. So I will be drilling 2 holes, one for the skimmer pump intake and the other for the skimmer return. I did do a search and found a site that has diamond drill bits for about $42. Maybe I'll just get it so if anyone needs to drill a tank in the future, one will be available.
