Setting up a custom built Nano, with sump and skimmer. Cool pics to follow. I want one small fish, but I want a really colorful one that does well in small spaces. Doenst have to be necessarily a hardy fish, as the system will be fairly stable with full equip detail, but the main tank is small (3gal). Any suggestions?

Clown goby would be a good choice.......
I have a banded high fin goby that stays put in a very small area of my tank.......beautiful fish! I've seen them in some small set ups too....

I just bought a clown goby for my 12g nanocube. He just stays in one spot under some rock work. Not the most active fish in the world. A baby clown might make a better impact. My clownfish really only uses the space of about 3g of my tank.

an emporor angle would be a great addition to a 12 g nano cube.

no angel, not even a pygmy could live in a 3 gal tank.

A rainford goby aka. Court Jester Goby. Those things are awesome and they only grow to 2.5"

r as some one already mentioned... a goby/shrimp pair such as the yasha. but it will have to be one of the smallest shrimp gobies..

yea, I have a pygmy angel in the main tank and he likes to swim around a lot. Beautiful fish though. I saw a cool citron clown goby at the shop the other day. The Court Jester Goby looks pretty cool...

I really like my Masked Gobies. Have 3 of them, seem to get along well ... small swimmy gobies, not the most exotic colored but seem hardy and easy.

[might be able to have a couple?]

FWIW, beyond my LFS which sells them cheap, think reeftopia had them for 3 for $15.

wat about a type of blennie

I dunno - many are algae eaters [only so much algae in a 3g that's well maintained]. The non-algae eaters [I have a Midas Blenny, a planktivore] swims a LOT and is fairly aggressive - seems like my 58 is about the right space.

Just my blenny take ... others know different :)

Fire fish or the Yasa Hase goby and pistol shrimp combo

Ive never had one, or know thier living requirements, but would a 6 line be ok? i think they are beautiful fish.

IMO a 6-line is way too active for that small a tank.

i was just thinking of a firefish. They belong to the gobies?

what about pipefish or a seahorse? Dare I say it, but anything I should know about keeping them...?

Firefish are part of the darthfish family and are really cool but are jumpers so a tight fitting lid is needed. I would not attempt a pipefish or seahorse as they are hard to keep. Seahorses need a tall tank 3x their height and with algaes to hold on to. live rock is also not recommended for them, dwarfs need constant feeding a few times a day.

Yes. The L in 55L means litres and so my tank is about 15 Gallons in volume.

If your tank is smaller than mine, don't get Tangs. Tangs need at least 50G to live happily.

If you tank does not have top-cover, don't get Firefishs. There is a very good chance that a firefish will jump out of the tank.

Hope this helps.
