View Full Version : Jawfish eggs!
I woke up this morning to find my male Jawfish with a mouthfull of eggs, This is a Jawfish dedicated Eclipe 12 gallon tank with an 8" course substrate bottom, Ive searched the net and used the RC search but theres not much information on rearing the frye, What is the mortality rate on captive bread Jawfish? and most importantly, what to feed them if and when they hatch? ANY suggestions, experiences, opinions, links would be greatly appreciated at this time,,, P.S. What is the incubation period for the eggs?

JD:
jawfish (Opistognathus aurifons)are mouth brooders (like banggais), and many have reported successful breedings.
Incubation period is one week, intial fry food is phytoplankton enriched rotifer sized foods, and sandbed zooplankton. Second food can be selcon/zoecon enriched BBS.
There is a long planktonic period (of approx 20days) then the fry "metamorphosize" (for lack of a better word) into a tiny version of an adult looking fish.
Apparently its a difficult fry to raise w/ intial looses upwards of 60-70% in the first week post release. This often time means insufficient foods, so plan accordingly
The breeders registry has two entries.

FMarni, Thank you for the information! Would a phytopankton such aa DT's be sufficiant for the frye? And could you please elaborate on enriched BBS? Thanks

Unfortunately NO, why you ask, mainly becuz these fish fry target movement, and must see a wiggling food, as you can guess many fish don't eat plants. Since phytoplantons are plants, and zooplanktons are animals you can guess which one these fry would eat

BBS is baby brine shrimp, and einriched means that you nutirionally enrich these before you feed them. Since brine are filter feeders you must put foods in the water, the more nutritious the food you feed the BS the more nutritious the BS will be for the fry. "you are what you eat"
You can read how to enrich BBS in my 96 article on breeding banggais

JD and ranaman:
if your looking for rotifers, I can recommend www.mountaincorals.com they sell a product called velvet green+ rotifers. It is a mix of live phytoplanktons and rotifers in a 1 gal jug. The nice thing is you are adding both food/plankton in one scoop and the light diffusion the phytos create is beneficial in the growout tank.

Thank you very much for all the great info! I have BBS hatching in a 5 gallon tank as we speak, as far as rotifers go, should I be feeding the fry that as soon as they hatch? And how long should I wait before feeding the brine shrimp? One more thing, will the female attempt to eat the fry? Im alittle concerned because she has a viratious appitite! Once again,,, thank you very much, Ill name a little one after you :-)
Well darn! Woke up yesterday morning and the eggs were gone! Nowhere to be seen, where the heck did they go? The night before they were fine, I could make out distinct eye formation and yolk sack, oh well, I hope they try again soon, since I have some Mountain Corals rotifers and hatched baby brine just waiting...
