does the clam stay open all the time when your clown is on him? ive heard it can really stress the clam out if he keeps having to close up

Very cool! Ha! I was going to post that my ocellaris does that too! I have one in my 12g reef, in which there are dozens of choices for host species for him: anemones, corals, sponges. He hasn't moved into anything per se, though he tends to sleep in my BTA at night (sharing it with a PAC). But during the day? You may find him rolling around in any number of things, including my baby maxima! Other organisms he enjoys lolling in are mushrooms, feather dusters and ricordia. All of these things, including my clam, stay open for him.
This kind of thing is one of the joys of the hobby. When we're not bogged down with lighting, water changes, ich, parasites, tests, dosings, dying organisms, crossing our fingers for overnight shipped fish, dead cnidarians nuking tanks, jumpers, imcompatible fish, bad hitchhikers, algae, cyano, moving, power outtages, filters, making RO water, vacuuming the substrate, and the kids getting too close to the open-top lionfish tank (j/k).......
We get to sit back and enjoy the remarkable interactions of these fragile creatures we've sworn to care for.
I love it.

Before I decided to place a Undulated Trigger in my tank...
I had the picture below... I Giant Clam that my Tomatoe clown would use to sleep on... so we called him the couch Tomotoe...
Then the Undulate ate both of them... which is hard to beleive oh wait maybe not...

I used to work in a LFS w/a huge deresa in the display. An ocilleris decided to host it, didn't seem to affect the clam at all after it got used to it. I always thought that crazy clown was flirting w/death, the clam was bigger than a volleyball! I'd hate for it to close on me. Never did close on that perc.
