I am currently in the process of building a surge bucket for my 75gal reef. Do any of you use one? If so, how long of a time period between surges should there be? How many gallons do you dump each surge and how long does the surge last? When I install the surge bucket, should I remove all of the power heads from the tank or leave one for circulation between surges? Thanks for everyones help and I'm sure I'll have many more questions before and after I install it :)

If you'd rather build a silent surge and for general info check this out. http://avdil.gtri.gatech.edu/RCM/RCM/Aquarium/CirculationSystem.html

This guy is apparently a very hands on engineer and was diy'ing stuff before most of us ever considered it.

I have built several different surge devices and I have settled on a modified version of the one at http://www.aquatouch.com/surge_b.htm Stay away from the autosiphion and fish float types. My surge device is 20 gallons and I feed it with a 1500 GPH pump so it surges a long time and recharges very fast. My tank is 7' long and 4' wide and that is why I use one this big. I still use power heads on a wave maker for cross currents.
